When looking at automobile sales, we in the United States tend to focus solely on national numbers. But it's a globalized world, and domestic sales only tell part of the story.
Worldwide, the Toyota Corolla narrowly edged out the Prius family of cars to hold on to the top spot for the first quarter of 2012. But the Prius' strong global showing suggests that hybrids are quickly crossing over to the mainstream and could see sales of 1 million units this year alone. It is worth noting that three of the top ten best sellers for quarter 1 were made by U.S. automakers: the Ford Focus (#3), the Ford Fiesta (#6), and the Chevrolet Cruze (#8).
So what were the top selling cars worldwide for the first quarter of the year?
1. Toyota Corolla (285,352 units sold)
2. Toyota Prius (242,947)
3. Ford Focus (236,261)
4. Volkswagen Jetta (202,804)
5. Toyota Camry (196,892)
6. Ford Fiesta (193,842)
7. Volkswagen Golf (191,532)
8. Chevrolet Cruze (188,863)
9. Nissan Tilda/Versa/Sunny (187,867)
10. Volkswagen Passat (182,405)
