If we needed further proof that subcompact car buyers are opting for foreign brands, look no further than July's sales report.

These were the top ten best-selling models, according to a statement from Hyundai:

Hyundai Accent: 6,938
Nissan Versa: 5,359
Ford Fiesta: 5,296
Honda Fit: 4,857
Chevrolet Aveo: 3,349
Toyota Yaris: 1,391
Mazda2: 1,072
Kia Rio: 1,011
Scion xD: 715

Only two of the ten best-selling subcompact models were produced by American companies: the Ford Fiesta and the Chevrolet Aveo.

The recently redesigned Hyundai Accent was the top-selling subcompact car in its first full month of sales.

"The all-new Accent outsold two great small cars we really respect in July – the Honda Fit and Ford Fiesta," said John Krafcik, president and CEO, Hyundai Motor America.

"It's a good indication that consumers are connecting with our new design [and] 40-mpg fuel economy" Krafcik said. "It's a great recipe for this economy."

Starting at $14,195, the price is also right for this economy. In addition to its 1.6-liter Gamma four-cylinder engine, the Accent is the first subcompact model to employ Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI), which improves fuel economy.

Hyundai's new addition to the field of subcompact cars is yet another indication that American automakers face a competitive battle if they wish to gain ground among subcompact buyers. And with the U.S. economy showing few signs of improvement, these fuel-efficient cars are likely to become an increasingly popular choice for prospective car owners.
