In an effort to cut costs, Mazda has decided to abandon the commercial truck market.
According to Japanese business daily Nikkei, Mazda has decided to abandon the commercial truck market in favor of consumer vehicles, as a way to cut costs as it focuses on recovery efforts, Left Lane News reports.
In addition to passenger cars, Mazda will focus on its Skyactiv high-efficiency technology, the Nikkei said.
The move is likely to have repercussions in Asian and African markets. The automaker's BT-50 pickup as well as several other light trucks are built at plants throughout Asia.
Many of Mazda's commercial vehicles are sourced from Japanese automakers such as Isuzu, Nissan, and Suzuki. The BT-50 was co-developed with Ford Motor Company. According to Left Lane News, Mazda will likely continue to sell the BT-50 on the consumer market.
