Why are laptop touchpads so bad?

By | March 17, 2010, 5:59 AM PDT

Does this happen to you? You want to go from point A to B on your laptop display and your touchpad mouse pointer randomly darts across the screen leaving a trail of unwanted open windows and applications. It’s like I am in Miami today and want to head for a spring training game in Fort Myers (I am) and inexplicably end up in Jacksonville.

Or the pointer races across the screen turning the content blue as if selecting for cutting or pasting. Or the pointer just wanders like gravity is weighing it down…or up. Or it doesn’t move at all as you try to regain tactile control on the touchpad.

Erratic touchpad mouse behavior happens all the time (several times while writing this post). Why can’t laptop pointing devices be more reliable and perhaps less smart? Or schizoid. Or lousy.

That’s a question I’m afraid I can’t answer. I could not dig up much advice to work around these problems. What I found were complaints like mine (see videos below). One said his was too hot to the touch. Some said they could not turn off their touchpads to install an external mouse which in my experience are more reliable, but you need a table surface for those. I’ve found trackpoints (the rubbery button amid the keyboard) work better too, but those have largely disappeared at least in lower priced laptops.

I thought it might the `it’s just me’ syndrome so prevalent with Windows PCs. Maybe, it’s just my HP Pavilion laptop, but somebody I was talking to yesterday had the same problem on his Dell (checking the web, the problem seems quite prevalent with Dell). And it’s even worse on a new Toshiba Satellite laptop we have.

Sometimes, the touchpad is the biggest complaint in otherwise stellar laptops as evidenced by this Engadget review in October headlined “HP Pavilion dm3t and its terrible touchpad get reviewed.” They are so bad, they get dinged in the headline!

So I suspect I am striking a chord on this issue. When I’m under deadline, the problem is a huge time waster. Whoops. I just moved my mouse pointer and it resized my window.

Yesterday, I explored my Windows 7 mouse settings. They are ridiculous. In Windows 7, there’s nine menus with a combined 2-3 dozen individual settings for sensitivity and speed. Don’t these developers have something more important to do? It’s just a pointing device. One cryptic setting is for “orientation” where an animated dolphin jumps up and down.

What would orient me is one setting so the pointer only goes where I send it. That’s the setting I want.

SmartPlanet.com is inherently pro-technology and so am I. But underneath all the wonderment often lies frustration driven by less than perfect design, engineering and execution.

RE: Why are laptop touchpads so bad?
Equally as bad as the quirks when I'm trying to use the touch pad are the cursor moves caused by accidentally brushing the thing while typing. Whole words wind up out of place and I have to interrupt my thought to correct the error -- or risk forgetting to proofread before the mail or document goes out.

I used to hate the tiny joystick on my old ThinkPad, but at least it never inserted errors into my work!

Is there a keyboard command that would disable the touchpad? Since I keep a mouse on my desk at work I normally don't need the touchpad at all.

RE: Why are laptop touchpads so bad?
Hmmm, I actually use a Cirque Smart Cat touchpad rather than a mouse with my desktop computer and it's a joy. And the number of settings from which to choose is nothing like what you described in Windows 7 (I've still using Windows XP). Perhaps you should search out a pattern before condemning all touchpads -- could it be certain manufacturers or certain drivers that produce all these problems.

BTW, I've never run into these problems on any laptop I've owned either.

RE: Why are laptop touchpads so bad?
I use both a PC and a Macbook laptop so I know what you mean
about the PC touchpads. You should try the "Touchpad" on Apple's
Macbook laptops. They are far superior to PC touchpads in every
respect and are what a touchpad should be. They operate very
smoothly and are gesture enabled so that you can do all movements
around documents, web sites, etc. with ease.

RE: Why are laptop touchpads so bad?
My biggest hate is the "tap to click" functionality.

This is easy to turn off (so you have to use the actual buttons) and loses most of the inadvertent action problems you're complaining of.

No Mouse While Typing
I have TouchpadPad (desofto.com) on my laptop. I haven't noticed any accidental mouse action while I'm typing since I installed it. But I haven't used it enough to say it always works.

The mysterious, slowly wandering mouse cursor or the sudden jump to somewhere out at the edge of the screen happens with my desktop optical mouse every once in a while, too.

RE: Why are laptop touchpads so bad?
I wish I knew why they are so bad. I have an Acer with all the same complaints. The only remedy I have found it to tape an appropriately shaped piece of plastic over the silly thing. If need be, I can use my leg as a mousing surface. That's a low-tech solution to a high-tech issue. It's not ideal, but it's far better than tolerating the hitches and glitches caused by the mouse pad.

RE: Why are laptop touchpads so bad?
... in my experience, people who whine about touchpads are generally older users, with shaky fingers and weak eyesight.

Most of us have learned to use them just fine. Quitcherbellyachin' and learn to use a touchpad.

RE: Why are laptop touchpads so bad?
Great article, I've always bought laptops with the eraser thing and turned the touchpad off as I can't deal with touchpads. I hate them. I am great with the eraser. I'd like to see laptops without any touchpad at all, the amount of space it consumes is ridiculous, the eraser fits right on the keyboard no problem. This would be especially good for a netbook platform IMO.

RE: Why are laptop touchpads so bad?
My first laptop (486-sx25) had the best pointing device ever. A trackball in the upper right corner, the buttons on the side. It was very natural to use your thumb for the ball & your fingers naturally rested on the buttons.

I don't have much of a problem w/ touchpads, other than gaming, but I hate the erasers. I never can get any precision out of them.

RE: Why are laptop touchpads so bad?
Box: HP Pavilion, Vista 64bit

I rage over the same touchpad sensitivities, too.

May I add my esoteric touchpad complaint? View the Processes tab of Windows Task Manager while logged with a User ID "less than" Admin and a button labeled, "Show processes from all users" will be visible in the lower, left corner (so far so good).

Press the button and provide an Admin Id and Password and the Task Manager resets to run under the Admin Id, BUT the slider on the touchpad (the simulated mouse wheel) ceases to work even though the touchpad otherwise works.

My best guess is that the supporting software, SynTPHelper.exe and SynTPEnh.exe, running under the original user ID (not System ID), are not accessible to the upgraded user environment.

RE: Why are laptop touchpads so bad?
I have used a lot of thinkpad laptop in the past, and I can say that
the touchpad works a lot better than any other laptop. Maybe only the
Apple touchpad works just as good.
But I still hate the touchpad. that's why I use the trackpoint !!!
That is the best thing ever.
Thinkpad trackpoint that is... Panasonic used to make some, they were
bad, they wandered anywhere for no good reason... I think dell used to
have it too, just as bad.
The trackpoint is the only reason I spend twice as much to buy a
thinkpad instead of any cheaper laptop, I prefer using something
expensive than swearing at something cheap.

RE: Why are laptop touchpads so bad?
I don't think it is really to do with touchpad... most often than not, the problem exists between the computer screen and chair.

Ensure that the desktop is clutter free, memory is in good shape, there are no spywares... touch driver is updated...

I have never faced this problem... I have used various laptops. ranging from IBM, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Toshiba etc etc... but Never faced this problem...

It could also be a problem with the hand dexterity.. which is not something i can comment on.

RE: Why are laptop touchpads so bad?
Really now. Get yourself a Logitech Laser USB mouse and disable touchpad tapping. If using an old laptop and you can't disable tapping, update the driver, then disable. Some new laptops have Fn+F9 to disable tapping You can use the USB Laser mouse on your leg while sitting or standing, or use it on a wall nearby .

RE: Why are laptop touchpads so bad?
I always disable the tap function on laptops. This is responsible for almost all the inadvertent menu/program selections.

I also had a problem with the cursor rising to the top. I disabled the eraser and the problem vanished. I had an older Dell with both a touch screen and eraser.

RE: Why are laptop touchpads so bad?
I have an older Gateway (Pentium4 with a discreet Radeon 9000 mobile) that doesn't give me problems. My Toshiba, which is in the for a cooling fan replacement, Just resting my palms on either side is enough for the buttons to act like I pressed them. This is mainly the left button at that.

I've had 3 HP laptops and all have a button to disable the touchpad. I use a wireless USB mouse on the arm of my chair or anywhere else and it works great.

RE: Why are laptop touchpads so bad?
The thinkpads we have (t60p, t42p) have an app
to turn the pad or mouse on and off. Except for
some occasional drifting across the screen they're
very trouble free, more so then some Dells I've
seen which seem to take 6 or 7 swipes to move the
pointer across the screen.

RE: Why are laptop touchpads so bad?
the dolphin orientatiom & other options have been around since win 98 or even 95 in my experience.
I have used axer's, NEC, Toshiba & all have the disable touchpad Fn key. That is good while typing long txts but knowing keyboard shortcuts to control cursor while in that mode is the 'key' :))

RE: Why are laptop touchpads so bad?
I have experienced problems with the touchpad in my Toshiba notebook.
One day I decided to find the cause of such a extrange behavior. To my
surprise I found that the problems with the touchpad are when the
notebook is on ac power with a cheap replacement battery charger. When
on battery power the touchpad works well.

RE: Why are laptop touchpads so bad?
My Lenovo S10 netbook doesn't have the problem anymore, for two reasons: I adjusted the sensitivity of the unit (increased the touch sensitivity and reduced the area of the fingertip size it recognises) and I also use a bluetooth mouse most of the time.

And yes, the standard settings are ridiculous for this, though nowhere near as bad as other brands. The other thing you can try is using a lighter touch on the unit so you don't accidentally press down on it while moving the pointer. That will take much more practice.

RE: Why are laptop touchpads so bad?
At one time in my career, I owned a Dell Lattitude C640. At that time, I also worked for Dell, and like all Dell empoyees, spent time on the phones.

When I first got the C640, I had had nothing but problems, the same kind you're complaining about, with the touch pad. It drove me crazy. And there seemed to be no settings or any otther way to fix it. Then one day, a new program arrived on the service website, something about the touchpad. I installed it and all of my problems magically disappeared.

While on the phones, a woman with a C600 called. Her call was about something else, but when I asked "Is there anything else I can help you with?" she began to complain about the touchpad while also saying that there wasn't anything that could be done. I pointed her to the new software and her problem went away as well.

What I learned from this is that somehow, there is a way to use software to fix this problem. What I also learned is that few if anyone actually makes the software, let alone installs it.

Sometimes it really is due to external issues
I've seen sticky mouse buttons cause issues for the touchpad. Dirt
gets lodged between buttons and that causes some confusion whether
you are moving or click-dragging. If you have a 2-button touchpad,
you might be "playing a chord" that is confusing things while you
type.

Another issue is caused by lid pressure. I thought Dell had this
totally worked out. I watched them test their rubber spacers that
keep the screen from touching the keyboard or mouse. It was mostly
to save the screen from damage since that's a lot worse than getting
an external mouse. Are all your rubber bumpers in-place?

I started putting a very thin mouse pad / microfiber cloth between
my keyboard and screen before I close the lid and put it in my case.
You're not keeping a lot of extra heavy items in your laptop bag
resting on the closed notebook, are you?

Just some thoughts...

RE: Why are laptop touchpads so bad?
Herzlich,

The idea of dirt causing touchpad problems is intriguing. My HP laptop's pad looks like stainless teal although it could be plastic...it seems to get dirty/oily after extended use. And that's when controlling the pointer gets difficult.
The problems also seem to come and go, but they tend to occur under those conditions.

Touchpads are great!
Never had any problem since my last trackball about 20 years ago (which nearly wrecked my wrist).

Like people above say - the first thing to do is to turn off tapping. Why the stupid computer makers set the pad to tap by default I cannot imaging - highly dangerous. Then set the pointer to move to the default location, and you are cooking with gas.

RE: Why are laptop touchpads so bad?
I love my HP Pavilion's trackpad. It has a button to turn it off
instantly! Also it's beveled downward so my fingers don't have as much
risk of hitting it while I'm typing. My mom's, on the other hand, I had
to turn off the tap-to-click functionality on her Asus because that
trackpad was level with the wrist rest area. Both of us had troubles
with it, so I know it wasn't just her.
I wish mine had Apple's gestures, though, because it's too easy to
accidentally scroll with the scroll area.

As for wandering pointers, I've only had that happen with optical mice.

RE: Why are laptop touchpads so bad?
Garrett,

I have the same touchpad and clearly it's an improvement w the adjacent
on/off switch. HP has tried to design a better one. But it still does
crazy and unexpected things.....another problem I noticed last night is
it prematurely sends email in Gmail. That happened to me last night
when I simply ran the pointer over the email. That could lead to a
disaster.

I still maintain they leave much to be desired.

RE: Why are laptop touchpads so bad?
I have a Toshibia laptop and so does my husband. He thinks he is lucky because his trackpad just quit working. I did find in my setup a way to turn the sensitivity off. It works great, no more accidental touchdowns. Right click on your synaptic pointing icon in the lower right hand tray. Open the preferences and noodle around. Not all systems have this turn-off ability so check your out.

My MacBook touchpad is quite a bit better than even that on the new Dell and HP laptops I have. And the Magic Mouse is mind bending once you get used to it.

RE: Why are laptop touchpads so bad?
I have a problem no one has mentioned yet. I have a Sony Vaio laptop. I have been through the touchpad settings and have everything in good order to function as I like--BUT--my touchpad takes vacations. It literally fritzes every 10-20 minutes and wont work at all in any way for 30-45 seconds. I have searched everywhere for anyone else having intermittent touchpad deadness, to no avail. I have a suspicion that it's a software issue, but can't find any info to address it. For me plugging in a mouse is the solution, but it destroys the streamlined footprint and function I wanted when I got a laptop in the first place. Any info that helps would be appreciated much!

That's why I use a MacBook Pro
Seriously. I don't use it for OSX (I do much of my work from a
Windows VM anyway). I use it for two reasons: the trackpad is
amazing - nice and big with multitouch gestures and no flakiness
- and its the lightest, thinnest 17" laptop I've ever had. It's the
only laptop I've ever owned where I don't mind using the trackpad
instead of a mouse. For the life of me, I have no idea why Dell, HP,
Acer, et. al. don't put better trackpads in their systems. They DO
exist.

RE: Why are laptop touchpads so bad?
To mHeartWood: It would be nice if you would name the software that
fixed the problem on your Dell laptop. Our experiences with Dell
laptops were so bad that we switched all our computer purchases from
Dell to HP when Dell refused to even acknowledge the problem. Have
had no problems with the HP laptops. (We bought only the 'corporate'
models, not the consumer ones.)

RE: Why are laptop touchpads so bad?
My experience is that touchpads need to be set up for the individual user. I have had only two laptops in the last 5 years, a Toshiba with XP and an ASUS with WIN7. I adjusted both touchpads with the supplied software and no trouble ever on both units. One thing that was definitely needed was to reduce the tapping sensitivity otherwise just a a graze of the pad caused problems. I have helped others with touchpad problems and they all had one thing in common: they had not read the manual supplied with the machine so they did not know they could adjust the touchpad.

RE: Why are laptop touchpads so bad?
When your laptop touchpad is not operating properly, you may notice the cursor jumping or double clicking by itself among other issues. There are some steps you can take to troubleshoot this before replacing this computer part.

Instructions.Things You'll Need:
?Alcohol
Step
1Adjust the touchpad sensitivity from the control panel. Perhaps lessening the sensitivity will solve the problem. In Windows OS go to your control panel, and select hardware and sound. Then click "mouse," and when the new window pops up select the settings tab. From there you can adjust the sensitivity. If your mouse came with its own software you may be able to adjust the settings from the system panel. Hover your mouse over the icons near the system clock, and look for an icon that is titled touchpad, or mouse. You can click this icon and adjust settings.

Step
2Clean the touchpad with rubbing alcohol in case there is a grease buildup on the touchpad. This is the most common cause for touchpad failure.

Step
3Remove the touchpad drivers from device manager and reinstall. Sometimes there can be driver errors that are preventing the touchpad from working. Device manager can be accessed via control panel in Windows systems.

Step
4Replace the touchpad if none of these steps work. Prices can range from $15 to $50 plus labor rates. It is best to let a computer professional change this since major disassembly is required to remove and replace the touchpad, and many fragile components will be exposed during this process

Why are these things still around?
Touchpads have been useless for some 10 years now. They actually got worse over the years with the additional features.

Billions of typing mistakes a day are produced because of the brush-over syndrome alone.

I am relieved that Apple got it right. But then, the question becomes:

"What is the excuse for Dell, Acer and HP?"

RE: Why are laptop touchpads so bad?
I would bet all of them are Alps Touchpads. HP and Dell and also
Toshiba have embraced Alps for their Touchpads instead of
Synaptics. Actually I found out Toshiba owns a big stake in Alps.
I have a Alps Touchpad on my HP Mini 311 and yes it has the
same issues with erratic tracking.
