Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo makes first manned flight

By | July 19, 2010, 5:55 PM PDT

Though the first official solo flight of Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo is still unknown, the spacecraft is still moving along towards that goal. The SpaceShipTwo made its very first manned flight this weekend at the Mojave Air and Space Port.

Attached to its mothership, cheekily known as Eve, the SpaceShipTwo completed its first glide flight with a crew on board. This is the third glide in total for the craft, and the 33rd for Eve. Virgin says the test, which included a total of six hours and 12 minutes in the air, showed that all is well in the ship.

In a video, here’s a look:

The SpaceShipTwo, which will eventually be known as the VSS Enterprise, made its first captive flight back in March. You can check that video out here.

Virgin, reports Wired, has yet to announce the date of the first solo flight of the SpaceShipTwo (meaning, without the benefit of a mothership). But this is a good sign that the project is progressing properly.

RE: Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo makes first manned flight
This is very cool...but perhaps the story can be clarified?
The three glide flights were solo; independent of the mothership, right?
So is the unannounced date for the first powered flight?

Recreational spaceflight = massive waste and pollution
It amazes me that Smart Planet can hail Richard Branson for his
work in trying to reduce CO2 from the atmosphere and then not
utter a single word of criticism when he pushes forward with
recreational space flight. It is a huge was of resources with
massive pollution all so the uber-rich can say they've been to
space. If he (or Green Planet) cared at all about the environment
they wouldn't support this kind of wasteful extravagance, they
would be protesting it.

RE: Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo makes first manned flight
riskfreeinvesting: You know full well, that there were many, many, many trees on the planet before man came along and altered the CO2 balance in the atmosphere. You don't have to worry about man's efforts to bring CO2 levels BACK to that, resulting in any lack of trees. Of far greater concern in that regard, are man's continuing direct harvest of them for you name it.

Rest assured, the trees are safe, in the push for carbon reduction.
