Video: The world’s most powerful electric car

By | September 2, 2011, 5:10 AM PDT

A team of eco-friendly firms recently gave the public a sneak peak at what they claim will be the world’s most powerful electric car when it’s officially unveiled later this month.

While the current crop of electric super-cars like the Tesla Roadster are no slouches themselves, the Quimera AEGT01 race car flexes the kind of muscle that puts it on par with the Lamborghinis and McLarens of the world. It features three electric motors that altogether pack 700 horsepower and over 1000 lb ft. of torque, which means it’ll get you from 0 to 60 mph in under 3 seconds. It also boasts a top speed of 180-mph.

The remaining specs on this, shall we say, “electrifying” beast are also impressive. Beneath the super-lightweight carbon fiber monocoque chassis is a nifty multi-speed transmission and lithium-polymer EIG batteries with enough juice for 20 minutes of full throttle racing.

Altran, a collaborating partner, says that the vehicle is undergoing further development and could someday be available for the consumer market.

In the meantime, the teaser video provides a glimpse of an early prototype so viewers can get at least a taste of what to expect during the car’s debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, which begins on September 12th.

Eco Friendly?
Tell me, how does a vehicle like this have anything to do with eco-friendly? It just is a clear representation of the hypocrisy that exists in many of the backers of the movement. Eco-friendly is recycling and repairing the old. Much more energy and resources are consumed in the manufacture of an green car than in the waste of using and old energy consuming one. Not to mention the manufacture is now done in areas of the world that have poor environmental control histories compared with the pollution generated by vehicles of the last 20 years.

Don't you see? Calling something "green" or "eco-friendly"...
...washes it of all ecological or moral implications. As we wait, Al Gore and Leo DiCaprio are waiting to take delivery of their taxpayer subsidized $100,000 sports cars as well. It's all good!

It's you middle-class soccer moms in your minivans that are the real problem.

Race Cars
Race cars have always been a test bed for new technology, making normal street cars more efficient and safer, and promoting the new technology.

Wastes Energy - NOT Conserves
700Hp has to come from some energy source. I will give the point that one large power plant should prove more efficient and less polluting (overall) when compared to a thousand internal combustion vehicles running around. BUT... this 700Hp MUST get its charge from an electrical supply and if it is not "filling up" from solar or wind then it IS NOT to be considered "eco-friendly". How could it when it is consuming the energy of seven (mainstream) cars in today's market? Until manufacturers/producers/builders get the idea that eco-friendly means conservation, sustainability, and recycling (by use of efficient means that waste little energy) then they shouldn't claim such vehicles to be "green" and sold as "saving the environment". I can't and will not believe that most people will see this car as eco-friendly but just as another purposeless & wasteful race car (besides other than 1/4 miles & the Salt Flats in what race can you only run for 20 minutes - lets see it take a win at Daytona to really qualify as a race car).

A horse can outrun it the first 50 feet.

not now but maybe one day
This is just a step, one in many... it takes time to learn how to walk, run, fly... we will not make it overnight... but in steps.

Forget Daytona!
Let's get them so they can compete in speed AND complete in an endurance race. Daytona is nothing in time in comparison.

I agree though, 20 minutes is maybe enough for a time-trial, and not much more.

And to expand... There's a lot of stuff being manufactured today touting being "Eco-friendly" and "green" that the production of is not even close, but bears the tag for the purpose of cashing in our desire to be good stewards of this planet.

Well...
It looks cool and is obviously fast, but it sounds horrific. If it ever goes on sale, I hope they're planning to throw in some high-end earplugs.

nuclear powered
I can't wait until they don't put batteries in these things and put a small nuclear plant that can deliver 2000 hp to the drive train through the motors..
