Socialnomics09, the movie

By | September 23, 2009, 8:37 AM PDT

This 4 minute and 22 second video may or may not convince you that social media is a fad, but it’s worth watching. With base thumping `get the juices’ flowing techno, the video recites some incredible statistics about the lightening fast growth of social media to the refrain “right here, right now.” It’ll pump you up more than Hans and Franz.

Here’s some of the more notable stats:

– If Facebook were a country, it would be the fourth largest. It just added another 100 million users in a mere nine months. It took radio 38 years to reach 50 million; TV 13 years; the Internet four years and the iPod three years.  The Republic of Facebook doesn’t quite cut it for me.

– In nine months, iPod app downloads hit a billion.

– Youtube now has 100 million videos. I’ve only watched a couple of million so far.

The Socialnomics09 video has 674,000 views since it was posted July 30 which makes me wonder if the creators effectively used social media to promote it (my favorite, United Breaks Guitars, was posted in early July and has 5.5 million). The 621 comments are more down to earth. Many ask how money is to be made from social media to comments while others complain about the music. There are as many places to express one’s self these days as there are opinions!

There’s a warning too. “What happens in Vegas, stays in, er, on Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Digg….you get the idea.
