Russia’s new stealth fighter to challenge for supremacy of the skies [video]

By | August 16, 2011, 10:34 PM PDT

Yesterday marked the official debut of the Sukhoi T-50, a Russian aircraft designed to challenge the U.S. military’s F-22 Raptor — otherwise known as the most advanced fighter jet on the planet — for supremacy of the skies.

The stealth jet, also known as the PAK FA, was unveiled during the MAKS-2011 air show held near Moscow and is scheduled go into mass production within a relatively short span of three years, according to a report published by RIA Novosti, a state-run Russian news agency. The news comes on the heels of the revelation back in January that China was testing their own stealth fighter dubbed the J-20.

Meanwhile, production of Lockheed Martin’s F-22 has been slashed from an original slate of 648 fighters to only 187 because of the technology’s high cost and a decision by officials to divert more resources toward developing the F-35, a smaller albeit cheaper and more versatile stealth fighter. The fact that last year’s National Defense Authorization Act didn’t include funding for the purchase of additional F-22s indicates the program, as it stands, simply isn’t a priority.

The Pentagon’s rationale, as repeatedly stated by Defense Secretary Robert Gates, is that, with the current state of warfare, upgrading the fleet to such a degree would be both expensive and unnecessary.

According to a report by ABC News:

“The F-22 is clearly a capability we do need — a niche, silver-bullet solution for one or two potential scenarios — specifically the defeat of a highly advanced enemy fighter fleet,” Gates said then. “[But] the F-22, to be blunt, does not make much sense anyplace else in the spectrum of conflict.”

Despite the U.S. Air Force’s involvement in multiple major combat operations since the F-22s went operational in December 2005, the fighters have never been sent into combat.

In defense of the program, dozens of supporters in Congress and state governments wrote letters to President Obama in 2009 arguing the full force of F-22s would be needed to meet the future challenge of other nations like Russia and China. At the time, Gates dismissed those claims and said the U.S. next generation fighters would greatly outnumber any adversaries’ for the next 15 years at least.

But the aerial arms race may soon be heating up. To demonstrate how formidable and cost-efficient Russia’s next generation aircraft is compared to the F-22, RIA Novosti created an infographic that shows how the planes measured up when pitted in a head-to-head match up.

While the T-50 appears to have equally impressive capabilities, the Russian newspaper Moskovsky Komsomolets reported that it isn’t as stealthy as the F-22 since the aircraft is designed to be more agile. Also, it’ll still be a while before the Russians can ramp up its military fleet to the point where it can truly rival the U.S. Air Force.

Still, if not now, then when should the U.S. worry?

What, US worry?
Who actually believes that the US does not have far more technically advanced aircraft being secretly prototyped and tested?

What, US worry?
When has Russia ever created technology that actually measured up to the hype. The US should be more worried about China.

We should be worried.
Have you never heard of the hydrogen bomb? The USSR had a tested H-bomb more than a year before we did, thanks to a certain genius named Sakarov. They also had rockets capable of carrying them to the US - one of which launched Yuri Gagarin into space.

typical dumb twit
oh lets see... the Russians made many many more effective tanks in WW2 that actually did defeat the Nazis for one. they made fighters and medium bombers that killed the Luftwaffe. Their nuclear subs scared the **** out of the USA so much that we invested a great deal of $$$$$ to create the sosus net sitting on the ocean floor in the north Atlantic to track their subs during the cold war. They have much more patience with other countries than the USA will in the next 50 years. We have invaded their airspace for decades during the "Cold-war". if they would have invaded our airspace for "Reconnaissance flights" like we called our U-2 flights we would go to war in a stupid ignorant American heart-beat.

The US doesn't own the world anymore, in fact we never-ever did! i so wish the stupid people in this country would get a grip on that FACT!

Tired of American Prole Doublethink Propaganda!
Charles G 1970 is in need of De-Programming of his US Orwellian Doublethink Brain Washed issues!!!
@Acer18 Well at least there is one other person on here that actually understands how out of touch with Reality Americans are. They seem to live inside a Non-Reality Bubble or are just BubbleBrains in the first place. Just because we have the largest debt of any civilized nation, exponentially greater than our ability to ever pay it off, doesn't mean we're still the most powerful and advanced nation by a long shot.

America's Technology is no longer solely US Government owned today. It's all based in Corporate ownership. Who primarily design, manufacture and operate off shore in so called developing nations, like India, Pakistan, China and Russia. Where these foreigners are soaking it all in at our expense. Apple the largest American publically traded Company (with near none of their money invested in America), is a prime example of the New American Way and the same goes for about every other company only registered as American Based and in name only.

Our market is no longer expanding and we've just been overtaken by China as the fastest growing and largest economy with the least debt. That wasn't supposed to happen for years. Yet it has.... and at the same time we lose jobs here we lose customers to buy all those foreign made devices and products. So now everything is almost completely manufactured in the fastest growing economy on the Planet..... China! ....where potential buyers are yet to be fully exploited!

Russians may not make the prettiest, in style military equipment, but they were the first to make Assault Weapons (AKM, AK47, etc) and the first to make ones in great quantity that actually worked better and beyond original design specifications. Greatness in Russian made Military gear comes in the form of thoroughly vetted use in the field of battle, not just on a drawing board. They have continually pushed Americans to spend more money on fit and finish of looks, while we're getting less practical results on the actual battle front! haha.... yet we still have stupid and ignorant American idiots waving flags and bragging about what we've created that's so great! grin

Case in point: Newest F-35 Lightning II Stealth Fighter will actually be armed with Missiles not designed by any American Firm. Very little (if any) of our own military muscle is actually 100% fully designed and manufactured in America by Americans any more!!!

Here's the test of this missile and why even America's Military (along w/ Poland, etc) are going with Foreign Designed and Built weaponry (Kongsberg Defense & Aersospace):

What, US worry?
CharlesG 1970........... I really don't know where to begin for a response to such a stupid statement? Their aircraft designs have been very good, especially in the rotary-wing area. The T-34 tank was considered the very best during WW2, not to mention that many of it's features were copied by the Germans when re-designing the updated Panzers. Their rocketry is probably 2nd to none. Remember Sputnik? The AK-47 has also proved itself beyond words. Etc.,etc.,etc.,etc.,etc.

What about Sputnik, duh
Why did we have a Space Race, not to get to the moon, but to ensure our superiority in Space and with ballistic missiles. Sputnik told the US we can hit you anywhere any time. SAC went into 24 hour continuous shifts where we had a nuclear bomber in the sky every day for years. We were scared to death. Maybe you do not remember the drills, "Duck and Cover" but they left out "and kiss your ass goodbye."

Sukhoi T-50
Say what you will, the Russians design some good-looking aircraft. However, given the size of their economy, I would not be too alarmed by this development, since they won't be able to afford many of these either. China is another matter - they also can beat the US on cost, and can probably produce many more J-20's than Russia can Sukhoi T-50's. The problem for us will be when they sell these aircraft to our adversaries.

Just copy the U.S. designs
Yes, it's really easy to consistently come up with great new designs when you can simply copy the hard work of American engineers and designers.

It's more than just an airframe that matters
Even if the basic airframe is comparable to the F-22, it takes a lot more than that to win a dogfight. Pilot selection and training is probably most important. Then there are also items such as avionics and missile technology. The F-22 can track several different planes at once and put missiles on all of them. We don't know what the Russian jet can do.

This hype is all that it is...hype. It is the military budget interests that drive this crap, and you-all fall for it. Fear mongering that we are not the top dog. Big deal.

Time of cooperation vs. Time of controntation
Time of confrontation (1945-1998) named Cold War announces the opportunity to arose a time of cooperation. Is gone forever...? Today the humankind faces too many problems to add-next again the same dance...Is a time of the absurd.

Exports
This is designed to export. Look at the price comparison. We won't be selling the F-22 to the open market. Russia will sell to anyone. Expect them in Iran once production ramps up, maybe France.

Easily Impressed?
Wow, you guys at SmartPlanet are way too easily impressed. They only had a rudimentary shape of a stealth fighter from a distance. This was no more stealthy than our fighter jets from the 50's and 60's.

Russia'a T-50 fighter plane
Reply to Gary Cook .. Dude you remind me of the masses of Americans who believe that no technical world exists outside the USA. Such arrogance and ignorance is common here in our country. So who put the first Human into Space ...Russia in 1957 (ex S.U.) Yuri Gagarin a cosmonaut. When our shuttles blew up, who's rockets and space craft took supplies to the ISS. .... Russian Soyuz... Its embarrassing to listen to the 1950 US mentality which still survives in 2011. Remember History's first artificial satellite, the Sputnik 1, was launched by the Russia (Soviet Union) in 1957.

when is enough, enough?
"if not now, then when should the U.S. worry?"
the US has as military doctrine absolute dominion --including over its allies and friends-- under the sea, on the sea, on land, in air, and in space. it continues to develop new and more powerful weapons when it already as the most powerful armed forces in history. and it likes to use them.
if not now, when should the rest of the world worry?

what does "2.5 times less" mean?
I don't understand what "2.5 times less" is supposed to mean. I know what "2.5 times more" means or even what "2.5 times as much" is (both would be 2.5 x whatever) , but less? If one has something that is 2.5 times less than an amount, it would be a negative value that is 1.5 times the amount. Does this mean that the purchase arrangement for buyers of the Russian craft would have the buyer receive both one stealth fighter and at the same time be paid 1.5 times the cost of the US aircraft. Somehow I find that hard to believe, but that's exactly what the phrase "2.5 times less" implies.

let's not be thick now...
"x is 2.5 times less than y" means "y is 2.5 times more than x". so if the f-22 costs, say, $1b, then the t-50 will cost $400m.

When to worry?
The US should have started worrying when one of its allies, India, started buying Russian Fighter aircraft instead of American Aircraft. It's not the cold war any more. Military might has become meaningless in comparison to economic might. It's clear the Russians are ramping up to out-compete the US. "Made in China", "Made In Russia", means "Not made in the USA."

SHOW OOF
PERSONALY I THINK THE J20 STEALTH BOMBER IS JUST TO GET THE US SCARED I THINK ITS FAKE BECAUSE IF YOU HAD A STEALTH FIGHTER YOU WOULD NOT TELL EVERYONE I THINK RUSSIA AND CHINA AND OTHER COUNTRIES ARE FED UP WITH THE US THE US THINKS THEY OWN THE WORLD SO THERE GOING TO SHOW THE WORLD THAT THEY CAN BECOME INDEPENDENT FROM THE US. WE INVADE OTHER COUNTRIES AIR SPACE EVERY DAY SO THERE GOING TO TEEM UP AGINST THE US. BUT I THINK THE RUSSIANS ALWAYS HAD A STEALTH FIGHTER.

When push comes to shove....
its the pilots and not the aircraft, that will win the aerial battles. Those war planes are only as good, as the men or women that fly them. I would guess that our pilots want a plane that will do what it is designed to do. And not be a piece of crap, besieged with mechanical problems. Planes that just decide to fall out of the sky, is not my ideal of tax-payers money, being well spend.
