Rank your cars and their makers right here

By | January 21, 2010, 9:36 AM PST

Judging from the large number of comments, my post earlier this week “Why I still hesitate to buy an American-made vehicle” struck a chord. I also noticed that several comments ranked their vehicles like I did.

Let’s find out what countries and companies makes the best cars.  Consider this an invitation to rank five vehicles you’ve owned in the comments section below accompanied by 25-word or less explanation why good and why bad for each. Humor is encouraged.

I’d love to see some Prius and other hybrid owners respond because we all know the power equation is changing. I’ll try to make some sense from all the comments in a post within a week or two.

We’ll keep the grading system simple (below). When I say repairs, I mean outside of routine maintenance such oil changes, tires, brakes, wipers and muffler unless they wore out before their time. And factor in everything else: how it drove, appearance, great technology, comfort, safety, gas mileage, fit and finish, body integrity, smell…whatever!

Here goes:

A - One for the record books

B - I like this vehicle, but it was in shop for repairs at least once a year (my `97 Silverado)

C - Didn’t much like it, but it got me where I wanted to go

D - Piece of junk

F - The worst S—box ever!

Allow me to kick it off:

1) My `98 Toyota Sienna gets an A because my family beat the bejeezus out of it and almost nothing went wrong with it in 130k miles. Pleasure to drive for a minivan. Absorbed fender benders well and still looked good. Traded in.

2) `71 Mercury Monterey Marauder gets a resounding F! Brakes were unreliable and this gas guzzler constantly overheated. It was a wild ride to the junkyard. Only plus to this 20-foot long Mafia-mobile was black exterior with brilliant red interior.

3) 87 Acura Legend - A. Acura got it right from the start. Amazingly paid $19k for a new fullsize Acura. Comfortable and a pleasure to drive.

4) 84 Honda Prelude - A. I waited six months for this car which Motor Trend at the time labeled “a little Rice Rocket.” Loved its handling, looks, gas mileage and reliability.

5) 1966 VW Poptop camper - F minus. No heat, electrical system constantly shorted out, terrible power, frequently jump-started and lots of rust. Dangerous to boot. Sold it for my asking price of $400 because it was a rare VW camper.

Ranking
1962 Ford Falcon Wagon B. By today's standards it would
be a D- or F. But this was 50 years ago. Simple to
maintain (yes I was able to do maintenance on the car-no
computers), reliable, economical six cylinder.

1972 Audi 100 B+. Again this was 40 years ago. Safe,
Solid, good handling. European was very in at the time.
Would have been an A but maintenance was an issue.

1974 Chevette C. Minimalist in every measure.

1976 Toyota Corolla Hatchback B. No reparis necessary.
Functional.

1978 Buick Regal B-. Very good styling. The six cylinder
engine was not perfected and ran like a dog.

1990 Pontiac Bonneville A. Great looking. Good features.
No reparis.

1998 Dodge Intrepid B. Red with gold racing stripes and
gold accented mag wheels. A four-door sports car. A few
repairs kept it from a higher rating. The V-8 was not
economical.

2000 Toyota Avalon A-. No sex appeal. Otherwise great.

2002 Toyota Camry A-. No sex appeal. Otherwise great.

Thanks,Learn.

No surprises on Toyotas...you also raise a good point..."by today's
standards." No doubt, cars are better built today. Still surprised to
see that Chevette get even a C!

1965 Plymouth Barracuda - A- by 1965 standards, a C by todays. Loved this rocket. Got good milage and great performance, 13.8 sec. @ 108mph in quarter mile (273 Hi-Pto engine w/4-speed manual). One of a very few Plymouth built with the light blue interior.

2008 Toyata Avalon Limited - A - This car not only runs great but gets 32mpg on the highway, 24mpg overall. Like the styling and looks with the light blue paint with light gray leather interior. Only item keeping it from an A+ is the navagation system. Hard to use and cost $250 to update maps.

1967 Dodge Intrepid ES - B+ - Had this car for 12 years and really enjoyed it. Great performance with the 3.5L motor. 27mpg hiway/23mpg overall. Very good fit & finished. Good comfort. Would have been higher rated but had to do a valve job and replace water pump. Ran & looked like new when we sold it.

2000 Toyota Tundra Limited - A - Love this truck. Have had this truck for 10 years. Has 8500 miles on it now and everthing but the battery and oil filter are original. Runs great with the 4.7L engine. Ride is great for a truck. Have had no issues with it. Not the best in the mpg numbers.

RE: Rank your cars and their makers right here
1969 Chevy Malibu gets an A, I did rebuild the engine once, in over 250,000 miles, Loved the car, handled great, loads of power and speed.
1984 Chevy Cavalier. A 200,000 miles on that 4banger without a major problem, even got hit in the back hard ebough to push it up on a curb, with the brakes on.. just scrated the placstic bumper cover
1998 GMC Sonoma Pickup. B+ only because it blew a rear main seal and leaked a little oil... still only 78000 on it.. wish I had bought the automatic, I shift my Goldwings.. prefer to be a little shiftless on 4 wheels.
2008 Chevy Malibu A so far.. has the same engine as my pickup but drives like it has twice that size. Good excelleration even uphill.. good mileage..
Do I not like foreign cars? Sure I do.. offer me a 2010 Lamborghini and I will prove it to you. but for everyday hauling my tail to work and back.. I like my American cars just fine.

RE: Rank your cars and their makers right here
Chuck,

You're a GM man all the way.I remember the 1969 Malibu SS w a
396...what a muscle car!

As I recall, the Cavalier was a pretty decent car for a small Chevy.

KGreports, I remember the 65 Barricuda too. It was hot in its day.

What bugs me is that many of the people reading these posts and
comments have never heard of half the cars we're mentioning!

RE: Rank your cars and their makers right here
2008 BMW 5 series. THe ride is obviously great. BUt their adoption and application of technology is astounding. all 4 corners (not just front and rear) have proximity sensing with a combo of tones AND a visual display that is far above others I have seen. Heads up display shows critical data and NAV system on the windshield. No need to look at dash (and no excuse for speeding) The car TELLS ME when service is due and all they do is place my key in a machine and it downloads all info + all faults encountererd by the on board computers. ALl thats missing is auto pilot.....
