Proposed smart grid framework coming tomorrow

By | September 23, 2009, 1:57 PM PDT

The National Institute of Standards and Technology tomorrow better known as NIST will release version 1.0 of its Framework and Roadmap for Smart Grid Interoperability Standards.

Commerce Dept. secretary Gary Locke

Commerce Dept. secretary Gary Locke

Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke will talk about the framework in his keynote presentation at GridWeek, a smart grid conference this week in Washington. The framework is the first part of a three phase plan to create, test and certify standards that allow smart grid devices and systems to work together.

“It identifies a foundational set of standards for grid interoperability and security, as well as high-priority action plans to fill gaps where additional standards are needed,”  NIST smart grid national coordinator George Arnold said in a press release.

The public will have 30 days to comment on the plan. NIST contracted with the Electrical Power Research Institute to develop the standards and 1,500 stakeholders had input. I plan to write about the specifics in a post tomorrow.
