Obama’s new national space policy focuses on…Earth

By | July 1, 2010, 5:30 AM PDT

President Obama’s new National Space Policy is going to be a tough pill to swallow for anyone wanting NASA to pursue traditional goals of manned space missions. But NASA has always been a contentious destination for public funding, and Obama’s plan uses the department’s expertise to help solve problems right here on our home planet.

The policy statement is pretty ambiguous, but at least we can get a sense of the direction in which Obama wants our space policy to go. It lays out NASA’s new role in supporting private firms like SpaceX, and also its new policy to focus on Earth-bound issues like climate change, human environmental impact, and changes to land and water.

The policy ropes in other governmental departments for this task, including the Departments of Defense, Commerce, the Interior, and Homeland Security.

In addition to a new focus on issues here at home, Obama makes a drastic change from his predecessor in relationships with other countries in the space arena. He actually says that “space belongs to all nations,” which former President Bush may not have agreed with, and asks for all space-bound countries to work together on projects like cleaning space debris.

You can read the entire policy here (warning: PDF file).

making this up?

I wonder if BHO ever took a science course?

I don't think BHO needs to take a space course. He is well-briefed by space experts.

Fantastic new idea from Teh One!
Great...just great... something ELSE to redistribute.

Why does PrezBO need NASA to focus on land and water? I thought after he was elected the planet would heal and the oceans would being to recede?

Once again he has no idea of the value derived from our previous scientific studies and discoveries in space. Many of them have already helped to understand our "earth" problems and solutions. Wait until those space able countries decide to use that arena for controlling our earth bound nation. Space is the new frontier that is being left to others.

RE: Obama's new national space policy focuses on...Earth
I really don't get the reasons for BHO's direction for NASA. It is the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, not the Department of the Interior.

NASA has been on the cutting edge of aeronautical engineering and space technology since before President Kennedy commissioned it with the goal to "land a man on the moon and return him safely to earth". Now NASA must share it's ideas and resources with private space corporations (many of them having former NASA and NASA contract employees on the payroll). I get helping private industry achive spaceflight but solving global warming? Mapping the oceans? Oil exploration? What is he thinking? It's like asking McDonalds to start working on the next iPhone or IBM to come up with a new way to make healthier french fries.

NASA along with JPL (and other NASA contractors) have successfully sent spacecraft (Manned and robotic) to the Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and beyond with many programs (like New Horizons, Cassini and the Mars rovers) still actively working. It is time that BHO (and his so called space advisors) take a second look at just what they set as policy, set aside the politics, and let the scientists and engineers create the future of spaceflight.

RE: Obama's new national space policy focuses on...Earth
I worked on millions of dollars worth of technology for NASA that was also very useful outside of NASA. NASA took the risks, the private sector did not. Almost all the things I worked on were R&D you could not get venture capital or any other sort of private funding to support - until a commercial product came from it.

The McDonalds/iPhone comment is very inappopriate.

Perhaps NASA should build an Earth Lander and drop it on the White House lawn; Mission: Search for intelligent life

I agree with President Obama. We need to stop spending billions of tax payers dollars. On exploring dead planets, such as Mars. And try to find ways to help preserve our home, planet Earth. Think of your own home. Wouldn't you keep it clean and maintained. Or would you neglect your home, in order to spend your time, and money. Trying to find out, whats going on in your neighbors homes.

RE: Obama's new national space policy focuses on...Earth
What's with all the right-wing whacks on this page?? (You paid RNC operatives are so easy to ferret out - the 'BHO' gives it away!!)

While I disagree with cutting manned flight programs, I agree that we need better missions! Unfortunately, the Republican Congress under Presidents of BOTH parties were 'H377bent-for-leather' on helping Big Businesses that they spent us into this massive debt! So now we can't afford to send humans to Mars, asteroids or other places without going into further debt. At least the private companies have venture capital to use...

We need to fix the problems we are facing with our environment, food supplies and over-population AS WELL AS expanding our understanding of the Universe around us. That said, I'm curious how many of those griping about the funds being cut also believe the Universe is 6,000 years old and was made in 6 days...

RE: Obama's new national space policy focuses on...Earth
The return on investment of the Apollo Space Program for the
entire economy was measured to be eleven years with another
30+ years of technological benefits that are still even being felt
today. The return on investment for the War on Terror or the
earlier War on Drugs will never occur or lead to another "Golden
Age" for the US.

Although I hope there is a return on investment on the Save the
Earth program, I have serious doubts given the way government
has handled both the global financial meltdown and Wall Street
gambling habits.

Timhfl386 - The McDonald's/IBM comments ARE appropriate when you consider that the ZERO is expecting results from an agency that is not only has no experience nor does it have any training to do what he is asking of it.
blackjack861 - just because we haven't found life elsewhere YET doesn't mean it isn't out there.

RE: Obama's new national space policy focuses on...Earth
NASA has always been working on solving problems here. And all of the money is spent here.

Considering just the effects of telemedicine there may be a positive ripple effect covering millions of people right here.

One small example, studies done on the ISS concerning bone loss may benefit our aging society. Hard to tell what might have been learned if we could go beyond the space station.

Like many before him, this President only listens to the experts that supports his position. Even then, he ignored the Augustine report that said Orion and any other launcher was more expensive than the Orion and Ares I. But, the Orion lifeboat idea buys the votes needed to get his policy past.
