New 9-speed auto transmission also a gas saver

By | January 12, 2011, 11:32 AM PST

Beyond the buzz surrounding electric vehicles and hybrids at this year’s Detroit Auto Show, there’s a quieter development that may seriously improve a car’s fuel efficiency.

ZF Technologies, a leading transmission manufacturer, has introduced the world’s first nine-speed automatic transmission for front-wheel drive vehicles that can potentially lead to “a double-digit improvement in fuel economy,” the Detroit Free Press reports.

The company plans to start eqiuping cars with the new transmission sometime next year. Chrysler is already slated to be one of the first automakers to roll out their minivans with the automatic gearbox.

The technology for the new transmmission is similar to an eight speed transmission the company already manufactures for rear-engine vehicles, which allows for shifting times that are so quick and unnoticable that double shifts and direct multiple gear shifts are executed with ease.

A built-in electronic control selects the right gear for driving conditions to eliminate the need to constantly shift gears. The transmission also comes with a shock absorber system in the torque converter that allows for rapid lock-up of the converter clutch, which should give cars better fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions.

A nine speed transmission may seem like going a bit overboard when most cars on the road today top out at six speeds. But ZF has plans to phase out production of its six speed transmission by 2014 and replace it with the more advanced ones, according to a report in Car and Driver magazine.

To get an idea of what to expect from the nine speed transmission, here’s a video illustrating the features of the eight speed transmission:

RE: New 9-speed auto transmission also a gas saver
My initial reaction is that it sounds expensive to build and I assume expensive to repair at some future date.

However from Chrysler's point of view if it is under pressure to up its mpg then this must be a very useful tool.

Curiously this week also saw a lost cost transmission for Asia:

RE: New 9-speed auto transmission also a gas saver
China is producing less than 1% of their energy needs from clean
sources and is fully utilizing its own coal and natural gas. China
recently signed a 50 billion dollar contract to import Australian
coal and is attempting to make similar arrangements to purchase
coal from the US Powder River Basin.

The worst form of pollution is poverty and American
unemployment is 10% and higher.

America has 1/4th the coal on planet Earth and 200 years worth
of natural gas. Cars and trucks can easily be converted to burn
natural gas and the conversion will produce American jobs.

Instead of competing with China, India and Japan for dwindling oil
supplies let?s keep the energy related jobs and money in
America.

And eliminating the need to import oil means the US does not
need to spend trillions on foreign wars in the Middle East. Plus
the annual 640 billion trade deficit with OPEC countries will
cease.

How can this be more efficient than the CVT in use on several cars now. With optomized electronic controls nothing is more simple than CVT which have been used on farm machinery for 50 years.

It is stupid and inefficient to convert cars to run on natural gas. It is smart and simple to convert natural gas into oil for use in current cars.

@lasater9

I absolutely agree. I have been driving a Nissan Versa CVT for more
than three years now. It actually feels strange to experience gear
shifting when I drive my wife's six-speed automatic.

RE: CVT vs 9-speed
the CVT units actually seem to have higher slip ratios, so while they
do beat the typical 4-speed transmissions for fuel efficiency, they
only break even with most 6-speed units (and manuals
transmissions with a skilled driver), and the 9-speed units will likely
be more efficient than the CVTs

Seems the CVT could be tweaked to match the 9 speed's performance. Of course, I haven't engineered either, so I am just speculating. With the price of gas going up fast, I'm sure the transmission designers are working hard.

Not all hemp has THC in it. These varities need to be legalized now. It makes one of the best bio-fuels, unlike crops grown now. Wasting corn for bio-fuel is foolish. There are several plants that grow in soil unsuited for food crops, with little water, and which grow very quickly. The American southwest could become a huge bio-fuel crop land.
But I still don't see why we don't "farm" lightning!

9-speed transmission
Using this type of transmission is a gas saver. Especially on long trips where you are in the highway for long periods, lower rpms saves gas and money.
