Mass. senatorial race pivotal for technology, healthcare reform, Obama

By | January 14, 2010, 10:56 AM PST

Next Tuesday, Massachusetts voters go to the polls to elect the replacement for senatorial seat occupied by the late Senator Edward Kennedy for 37 years. Big shoes to fill and even bigger stakes.

What was supposed to be a cake walk for Democratic nominee Martha Coakley against Republican Scott Brown has turned out to be a tight race, according to the polls. Ever since Brown pledged to be the 41st vote against healthcare reform (see video below), the race has taken on national implications.

Consider this: healthcare reform down the tubes could mean the same for Obama. The defeat of healthcare reform from losing the 60-seat Democratic majority in the Senate could be disastrous for the President. But the political implications aren’t the only reason to be frightened by the ascendancy of Scott Brown.

Massachusetts is a world leader in research, healthcare, innovation, education and thinking outside the box. The state’s main exports to the world are brainpower and new ideas. Even past elected Republicans save Mitt Romney have been liberal thinkers.

Electing someone who recites the strictures of the “Party of No” diminishes that special and unique standing. Just consider what Massachusetts has already done for healthcare reform with its novel and successful programs.

Coakley, yes

Coakley, yes

Even if she is a bit dull personally, Coakley is more simpatico on issues that nurture science and technology. She endorses science- backed initiatives such as clean energy, combatting global warming, cap and trade and innovation in education.  If Brown said he supports those things and he doesn’t,  his web site “issues” page is starkly thin. He devotes a mere paragraph to each mega topic and “Energy and Environment” is no exception. It gets 95 words.

He says he supports a “common sense approach” to environmental protection and the “reasonable and appropriate development” of alternative energy. That’s code for don’t spend any government money on the environment and energy. The foundation of his appeal is the tired anti-taxes refrain. Whatever happened to government priming the new technology pump? That’s what investing in America is all about.

Brown’s obsession with anti-tax rhetoric betray his notion that somehow he’s an independent voice. If he doesn’t get elected, he will follow in Palin’s footsteps and become a commentator on Fox News. Mark my words.

His strategy is to exploit statewide and to an extent national anger about joblessness and high taxes. Ok, but what comes after that?  Where are the solutions? This emperor has no clothes.

RE: Supporting Coakley is smart for technology, the nation and Mass.
If I wanted your personal politcal views I would have signed up for a political blog. The good for "tech and innovation" isn't even a convincing foundation for your soapbox. I otherwise really enjoy Smartplanet in general, so I hope you don't make this mistake again.

Get it right..
As a lifetime resident of MA I would like to remind you that this election is not an election to fill Teddys seat.

It is to fil one of the US Senate seats representing the people of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

It is not a god given right that only a Democrat can occupy it and that attitude held by Coakley and many of her supporters will be her downfall.

No Democrat has a god given right to that seat just because the murdering drunk driver Teddy sat in it. I never voted for Teddy because of what he did to Mary Jo the year I was born.

Democrats like me are very mad at the Democrat party in Massachusetts right now. Gov Patrick and people like Coakley have ruined this state.

If you live here and cannot admit that than you are either a blind fool or a paid employee of the Democrat party machine.

RE: Supporting Coakley is smart for technology, the nation and Mass.
How in god's name can you say Coakley has ruined the state? That's pure nonsense. Patrick has at time been ineffective, but "ruined the state!?" C'mon..Finneran and DiMasi maybe, but how can you say such a stupid thing especially when you purport to be a democrat.

I agree there's no god given right for a demo to Ted's seat....but Brown is a right wing extremist and 90% of the time I'd vote w Coakley...whether I liked her on not.

Get real....

Anger manaagement needed.
Like many libs in Mass you need some. You cannot take a little of the truth?

How about Coakley giving her friend State Senator Dianne Wilkerson a pass on bribery?

When Coakley failed to follow-up on reports of Wilkerson accepting bribes the FBI stepped in and got great photos of Wilkerson stuffing bribe money in her bra after a payoff.

Coaklys office also failed to follow-up on a state investigation into campaign finance law violations by Wilkerson. Wilkerson has not complied with several court orders to provide information about her spending of campaign funds on person items.

Coakley had also refused to enforce an out standing warrant for Wilkersons arrest on contempt of court charges related to the outstanding court orders. Again the FBI stepped in and got her on that warrant when they arrested her for the bribery charges.

I could go for hours.

How about the Coakley goon who knocked over a reporter who asked Coakley if she still thought there were no terrorists in Afganistan?

As she stated during the last debate....

She said it on the same day that al-Quida terrorists killed 3 US soldiers in Afganistan......And they had bragged about it.....

Or the fact that her Washington DC fund raiser this week was attended by several lobbyists working for the very health insurance companies she claims to hate?

She liked their money......

Corruption runs wild while the AG runs for Senate and like so many others you choose to bury your head in the sand.

I don't think John was making a purely-political point
By and large, he's saying Coakley's positions on high tech issues are
more favorable to the industry than those of her opponent.

As the comments here note (without saying so) tech is not a big issue
in the race.

I agree with them, by the way, that the seat belongs to the people,
and not to a party. But no Massachusetts Republican to the right of
William Weld has been elected statewide in a long, long time. Scott
Brown was (until he saw he might win) a Tea Party Republican, in
other words a Bushite ideologue.

Saying "Bushite ideologue" is going to get some here riled, but what
are the practical differences between what the Tea Party wants to do
and what Bush did? Would they have forgone the tax cuts? No. Would
they have foregone the war? Most favor more. So what's the
difference? Rhetoric? Bush talked deficit reduction, too. No
difference there.

Find me something a Tea Party Republican like Scott Brown would do
differently than George W. Bush, and we can talk about that. But I
have yet to find anything. (Which means that Bush was a bottom-up
representative of a coherent political movement, something liberals
need to understand and take to heart.)

RE: Supporting Coakley is smart for technology, the nation and Mass.
Brown is more than Trent Lott w a Mass accent. As for Wilkerson, I
don't know, but I hardly see a Wilkerson Coakley conspiracy. Do I love
Coakley? No...is she the lesser of two evils? Yes...would we be having
this conversation if Capuano was the candidate? Probably
not...Massachusetts will pay bigtime if Brown wins...he'll put us on
par with the redneck states of the south.

The no new taxes pledge is a euphemism for doing nothing.

Keep drinking the cool-aid....
You will accept a corrupt politician just because you think their policies are good for your industry? What a sad state of affairs...

Martha Coakley was the Middlesex County DA for only a few months when she had the opportunity to free an innocent family jailed for crimes they never committed and instead she fought all attempts to free them. This in spite of overwhelming evidence proving their innocence.

The Amirault family was destroyed when the mother, daughter and son went to jail on trumpped up child abuse charges in the 1980?s. By 1993 the amount of evidence proving police and prosecutorial witenss tampering, evidence falsification and overall misconduct by everyone involved in the trial got to where the process to free the family members began in earnest.

Martha Coakley, as Middlesex County DA, had the opportunity to right a tragic wrong when the evidence was presented to her.

Instead, Martha Coakley fought to prevent their freedom at every turn. Violet Amirault died in jail in while Martha Coakleys office fought against freeing her from jail for crimes she never committed.

After the death of Violet, Martha Coakley reluctantly agreed to a deal with Cheryl Amerialt freeing her in 1999 only after a gag order was included and the state was freed from all liability for false imprisonment.

Because of Martha Coakley the Amirault family was barred from talking with the press about the case. They can never tell their story in a book or movie and they can never make money from telling the story of their wrongful imprisonment. They can never sue the state of any local or state authorities involved in the case for wrongful imprisonment.

Gerald Amerault sat in jail until he came up for parole in 2004. The parole board had recommended his release in 2002, but Martha Coakleys office lobbied then acting governor Swift to reject a sentence commutation. Swift went with the recommendation and Gerald sat in jail until the parole board used it's athority to free him in 2004. Even then Martha Coakley recomended he stay in jail.

Martha Coakley is responsible for Violet Amirault dying in jail instead of being a free woman.

Martha Coakley directly caused Gerald Amirault to spend an additional 5 years in jail for crimes he never committed.

The family cannot sue the state or make any money off this tragedy because Martha Coakley demanded the no liability and gag order clauses as conditions on the mother?s release.

Get your head out of the sand.

You cannot get any facts right...
"Just consider what Massachusetts has already done for healthcare reform with its novel and successful programs."

Massachusetts is nearly bankrupt from the cost of the health care reform passed under Weld, a Republican. Brown, also a Republican, voted for the health care reform.

He recognizes the damage it has done to the state. He acknowledges the mistakes made and he does not want to see it repeated on a national scale. He support smart reform. Not the politics of bribery that fill the current bill.

As for the damage done by the health care reform in Massachusetts.

There are 40,000 fewer doctors in the state now because of the hostile environment created by the state. Many retired and hospitals in the state are having a had time attracting young doctors.

The average wait times for an appointment to see a doctor has gone up from a national low of under a week in 2004 to over 3 weeks in 2009.

6 hospitals are suing the state of Massachusetts for defaulting on Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements because the state is broke.

Taxes are going through the roof to fund a health care system that has grown to be nearly 1/3 of the state budget.

The agency responsible for implementing the REFORMS has doubled its payroll budget every year since its creation, but has not added a single employee. Do the math. A handful of government hacks have doubled their salaries every year for 3 years.

And just why do you want bring this kind of SUCCESS brought to the federal level?

And Coakley supports this king or REFORM.....

If you live in Massachusetts as you claim, you must live on Martha?s Vineyard with the rest of the elitists.

Did you see the news?
A flyer supporting Coakley that was mailed by the Mass. Democratic state committee is the subject of a criminal complaint from the department of elections.

Apparently it makes the outrageous claim that by opposing the current health care bill Scott Brown would be denying emergency medical attention to the 1600 plus women raped in Massachusetts every year. The mailer contains 1600 thumbnail photos of women representing the rape victims.

Beyond being factually inaccurate on the policy statement, it seems Martha Coakleys campaign and the state Democratic committee used the pictures of real rape victims which the Attorney Generals office had access to. Guess what? Doing that is against the law.

The state Attorney General knowingly participated in breaking several privacy laws and you want this woman to represent the Commonwealth of Massachusetts?

President Obama said to look under the hood of a candidate before voting for them. I just did not know he was talking about Martha Coakley.

Coakley is proving how out of touch she is with the world and her state...
She said there are no terrorists in Afghanistan. I wonder why Al Quida claimed responsibility for the attack on Kabul yesterday? Senators play a key role in US global relations. You want her on a committee overseeing foreign relations or voting on a treay?

Several Coakley TV spots and flyers mailed to voters have Massachusetts spelt wrong. It is not spelt MASSACHUETTES.

She also thinks that by voting against giving FREE collage tuition to illegal aliens means that Scott Brown is opposed to funding education for children. Her staff can't spell, but she wants illegal aliens to get free tuition grants.

The thing this week that confused many voters was when Coakley said Curt Shilling was a Yankee fan during a radio interview. The shows host tried 3 times to give her a chance to correct herself and yet she was insistent that he was a Yankee fan. It makes people wonder if she could read the bills she would be voting on because she sure does not read the paper on major state events.

My favorite is that Ted Kennedy's widow endorsed Martha Coakley yet repeatedly called her Marsha at a rally this weekend. It shows how well known and respected Coakley is within the state party ranks.

So why is she good for the state and the nation?

Heads up on the Tea Party
Dana, you dead wrong about the Tea Pary folks being "Bushite" idealogues. Most are fed up with government spending regardless of who did it. While they may have supported the war (and its spending) they did not like the "bridges to nowhere" that congress slipped into everything from transportation to military approprations bills. If anything the Tea Party views Bush (and the republican congress under him) as a fiscal moderate and not conservative! Chew on that for a bit.

Bad behavior by one party does not mean its acceptable by the other. Dems are just as corrupt as the Repubs when in power. So what is the solution? How about reduce the corruption by reducing the power? Reduce the spending and reduce the regulations, shrink the govenment. The states technically should be managing many of the issues this federal goverment is trying to control.

What if someday a conservative party has a 60 vote majority in the senate. They then decide that California needs to own up and develop their natural resources for the good of the country. An oil well near every beach and a nuclear power plant in every county. Sure the state has laws but who cares? The fed is always right. Right?

I love it an ultra liberal state has just seated a Republican. Maybe its time you admit that your Liberal left wing views and all the Robin Hood antics your party pulls are not what the public really wants. The people have spoke!! Now it's time to take control of congress again. Please think this: how many democrats had to vote this way because of the radicalism in congress right now ?

Nationwide support......
If Coakley was so much better for business why did the stock market jump over 100 points on the early rumors of a Brown victory?

Why is there a market rally today?

Businesses know a good change when they see it.

Over half of the campaign signs for Brown that I saw on my daily commute were handmade. This is as grassroots as it gets.

Brown won because people are mad.

Mad at the lies being spread by politicians like Coakley.

Mad as being dismissed by their Congressional representatives during the summer recess.

Mad at a Senate that has pushed ahead with a health care reform package that does nothing to lower the cost of healthcare.

I know hundreds of everyday Democrats, not the far left nuts, who are far madder at Obama and the Democrat party than they ever were at Bush.

The Hope and Change of 2008 has turned into the realty of a virtual one party dictatorship. The Democrat efforts to force legislation through Congress with bribes and by physically locking the opposition out of the negotiation room in 2010 have struck a nerve.

Deny it all you want, but Obama and the Democrats are rapidly losing the center that gave him victory in 2008. The far left nuts or the far right wackos combined make up less than 20% of the voting public. Any sane politician knows this.

Politicians cannot win elections without the semi conservative center. Reagan knew this, Bill Clinton knew this and Obama knew this in 2008 when he pretended to be a centrist. Unlike Reagan and Clinton, he abandoned that facade in 2009 and his true face became known.

To quote a Japanese Admiral after Pearl Harbor was attacked, ?we have awoken a sleeping giant.?
