When I mentioned to a colleague that I would be seeing Astronaut Buzz Aldrin at an MIT conference tomorrow celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon shot, he asked “where’s Neil Armstrong?”
Good question. As it turns out, the reclusive Armstrong, according to an MIT spokesperson, is planning to attend today’s memorial service for former MIT engineering dean and professor Robert Seamans who died a year ago. Seamans was one of Apollo 11’s principal architects. Like Seamans, Armstrong who turns 79 in August, also studied aerospace engineering.
Armstrong will be speaking at the two-and-a-half hour remembrance, but is not listed as participating in any other events of the Giant Leaps Symposium which ends Friday. In fact, Armstrong’s attendance at the service for Seamans has been kept quiet which I suspect is the way he wanted it.
The MIT spokesperson also added that he will be giving “no interviews.” I will cover the event as well as others from tomorrow’s power-packed symposium. So now we just have to find out the whereabouts of Michael Collins, the third of the three Apollo 11 astronauts. My guess? He’ll be at the service, too.
