GPS Shoe keeps track of Alzheimer’s patients gone astray

From the outside, GTX Corp’s GPS shoes look just like Grandpa’s typical choice of footwear. But hidden on the inside is a tracking system that helps people know when their relative with Alzheimer’s has wandered off and, if so, where he is. This technology could finally solve the problem of elderly patients with dementia who have a tendency to go astray. Worsening that problem is the fact that often, the patient doesn’t realize he’s lost, making him even more difficult to find.

The tracking device in the shoes helps address that issue by allowing family members to set boundaries around their home and yard. If the patient wanders outside of the lines, their family will be notified of their location via Google Maps on a phone. GTX’s innovative shoes will be available later this month, and will cost $300 up front in addition to a monthly subscription fee of up to $40. It’s certainly an investment, but it could mean that not all who wander are lost.

Price Gouging?
I can understand the price of the show at $300 but $40 for a service that sounds entirely automated seem excessive. People will of course pay $480 a year to insure a loved one is kept safe but there are others that won't be able to afford it.

GPS Shoe keeps track of Alzheimerâ??s patients gone astray
Price gouging is right. Use the fear of loosing a loved one to make huge profits! Also I believe it is a great idea, if they can remember to put them on!

really?
I agree it's way overpriced. And why do I have to pay to have it monitored? Why the heck can't I look up the location on my pc? That would seem to be the logical thing to do. Why does the entire world have to be in such a haste to make a buck off of other people's misery? Hasn't anyone learned anything from all the Occupy Wallstreet people? The general public is not idiots anymore...this is an educated public even without a college degree and they don't like being manipulated and won't go for it for a second. If you want to sell them something, pretend you are actually one of them. Second of all, the damn things are ugly as all get out. If you want to sell them, you'll have to do better than that.

Wouldn't have worked for us
My father-in-law used to wander off barefoot...

And $40 a month? Really? This is obviously intended for people who live in named developmentes...

If you've ever lost anyone who's wondered off...
...you wouldn't question the value of paying $40/month for this. We would have.

Also consider that the window between when most people are diagnosed with Alzheimer???s and the point where they are no longer physically able to "wander" is only a few years, the potential customer is only subscribing to this service for a relatively short time.

And there's really no such thing as "gouging". It's an emotional term. If you think this is too much to pay for a service that didn't exist yesterday, don't buy it. If enough people don't find value at $40, they won't buy it and the company will be faced with lowering their price or going out of business.

I think the idea is good, but an implanted GPS would be better
Also, while the initial price is ok to be expensive, should be an app for a smart phone and PC to keep track. I agree the monthly charge is excessive. Many systems are out there to monitor the elderly who live alone, at a much lower price.
