Fenugreen’s FreshPaper lets produce keep for longer

By | September 4, 2012, 2:45 PM PDT

FreshPaper

FreshPaper

A new and easy to use product keeps fruits and vegetables fresher for longer, making it easier to choose healthier items at the grocery store without having to worry about them going bad too quickly. Named FreshPaper, the material comes in sheets that can be placed under the produce where it’s stored.

The company compares it to the “dryer sheet” for produce, and there certainly are similarities in appearance and simplicity. It works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria, fungi, and degradative enzymes. FreshPaper is free of chemicals and made of entirely organic materials. It’s biodegradable and can be composted or recycled.

This simple solution, which is based on a grandmother’s old remedy, offers significant benefits to both the consumer and the farmer. 25 percent of the world’s food supply is lost to spoilage, and this simple innovation by social enterprise Fenugreen does something to fix that. Not only does it address issues of wastefulness, but it also promotes healthy eating because people are more likely to buy fresh produce if they don’t have to worry about it getting rotten within a couple days. Available in packs of 8 for just 4.99 a package, it’s a cost-effective solution to multiple problems.

Am I missing something?
"...based on a grandmothers old remedy..."

That's it? All you have? I can't be the only one intrigued by that phrase. C'mon Jenny, dig down a bit deeper, please. Even just this snipet from their web site would have been enough...

"FreshPaper was developed by a young inventor who happened upon the active ingredients, a mixture of edible organic spices, while visiting her grandmother in India."

The phrase "free of chemicals" is misleading, too. I wouldn't drink organic hemlock!

I also have to wonder, since spices are involved, whether or not any flavor is transmitted to the food.

I think I'll go buy some and find out!

Thanks for letting us know about it, Jenny.

Saying something is "chemical free" = "I'm stupid." on tee shirt.
Everything is made of chemicals - organic or inorganic, natural or man made - it all has chemicals. All matter is made of chemicals. Clearly, there is a chemical involvement between the inclusion of the paper and it's connection to inhibiting bacteria, fungus and enzymatic action. Whether those chemicals are toxic to us or not is debatable, but not knowing what they might be - it isn't going to be debated and I'm guessing that is the PR dept. intent. Yes, even Grandmas uses chemicals and as pointed out above some natural chemicals are poisonous. In the 1950s my Grandma used DDT to get rid of household pest and in her garden, so "Grandma recommendations" can leave a lot to be desired as well. It would be nice to see their toxicity tests - if their were any, before using it with my foods.

Everything is made of elements (remember that good old periodic table of elements)... Chemicals are made of elements, not everything is made of chemicals... Silver is an element that has toxic effect on some bacteria, viruses, algae and fungi without high toxicity to humans. Silver is not a chemical...

Perhaps you should go back to school because you are NOT smarter than a 5th grader.

So WHAT IS IT ?????
You don't say, nor do you say WHY you don't say.

It the material proprietary? Is the material an antibiotic? Nano-Silver?

Are we now going to reap the "benefits" of extended vegetable shelf life, while at the same time suffering the effects of a low-dosage antibiotic diet, like our food animals do/are? Is this "good idea" just feeding the growth of super microbes?

How about some REAL information on the product, rather than just industry cheer-leading?

Call the president Joe!!! Call the National Guard!!!
Its a blog Joe... Perhaps you should relax and go learn what a blog is... Once you understand blogging, you can relax your cheeks a bit and un-wring your p@nties... A blog is not the place to go for that "real information" your little heart desires... It is a good place to go to get the clif notes on something that might spark your interest (think of it as a time saver, or an elaborate headline, or a good start).

Remember Joe... Google is your friend... If you use it, you will find Fenugreen's web site, complete with a FAQ that will thrill all the desires of your giddy little teenage girl curiosities.

Looks like this is an all natural product using only edible spices (including fenugreek) and paper, all natural, no chemicals, no antibiotics, no super microbes as a byproduct.

Don't settle for industry cheer-leading Joe. Go forth and get that "REAL information" you so desperately want and need. You go Girl!!!
