A digital book-sharing service modeled after Napster allows students to read in the classroom when they otherwise would not have been able to. Bookshare is a nonprofit that provides free and accessible e-books to students with print disabilities.
The program offers support to students with a wide range of disabilities by providing classroom access to books that can be read aloud by computers, magnified or spaced differently. As a result of this technology, students who otherwise can learn at a level consistent with their age but struggle with print in the classroom–based on vision problems or other learning disabilities–now have a way to stay on the same track as their classmates.
Bookshare can give schoolchildren free access to this technology due to an award it received from the U.S. Department of Education Office of Special Education Programs. Currently, they have more than 150,000 student members enrolled in their service.
