Boeing to sell commercial space flight tickets as soon as 2015

By | September 16, 2010, 1:19 AM PDT

Boeing announced today that it will be entering the surprisingly competitive space tourism market as soon as possible, thanks to a partnership with Space Adventures. Space Adventures is one of the premier space tourism companies out there–they’ve sent seven tourists on eight different missions aboard the Russian-built and -operated Soyuz spacecraft.

“Tourist” is probably a misleading word here. Anyone that goes into space, whether they’ve paid tens of millions of dollars or not, requires extensive training. For Space Adventures, that means months of hardcore physical and intellectual training. These space tourists even have to learn to speak Russian–that’s the language of the guides and pilots, so it’s a must.

Boeing would of course conduct their trainings in English, but that’s not the only draw. The Obama Administration’s main theme for the space program has been a new push towards privatization, as well as opening up the field to amateurs or tourists (and all that sweet amateur money). Another company, SpaceX, has already secured some public grants for its own travels.

Boeing’s trip would be a low Earth orbit, and will be competitive in pricing with other, similar schemes. To give you an idea, the last person to use Space Adventures was Guy Laliberte, the French-Canadian founder of Cirque du Soleil, who paid $35 million for the privilege.

The craft in question has actually not been built yet, though it is fully designed. The CST-100 is a round-bottomed, pointed-top capsule sort of similar looking to those used in the Apollo missions. Boeing hopes to have the seven-seat CST-100 ready for launch by 2015.

I'd like to work on a moon base or mining on an asteroid camp.
As soon as I make my first billion, I'm going.

I neither need nor desire to go into orbit. We get exposed to enough, perhaps too much, cosmic radiation as it is at the 45,000 foot cruise altitudes characteristic of today's jetliners. Furthermore, jetliners are cruising not only higher but also a little slower than they used to, because of the high cost of jet fuel.

The idea of going into orbit for fun is not new. Upwards of thirty years ago a science fiction writer contributed an article to Playboy magazine, in which he advocated what amounts to a Playboy club/resort in orbit. But frankly, if I'm to go to such places at all, I'd rather they be on good old terra firma, or on a cruise ship at sea.

I'm very ambivalent about their expertise. They are unable to launch the 787 Dreamliner and have excuses galore for all the postponements. Let's make sure this new lightweight airliner really works and is ready to fly before getting " lost forever" in space. They should focus on the orders they have in hand and make them a reality before making plans to sell space tickets. Lol!

Dang if I had an extra 35 million.....
Yea, you're right - I'd go into space. But I'd feel badly about it, with all the hungry kids in Hutto, TX......

I'm all for anything that pushes the envelope in moving humanity away from dependence on this single ball of rock for survival. We are guaranteed extinction if we can't manage to establish viable, self-sustaining (yes, I know, marginally redundant) colonies elsewhere in the cosmos. NEO and even the moon are not nearly enough.

$35 million is ridiculous... Do I get to keep the craft as a memento?? Also, the average passenger probably won't want to go through "months of ******** physical and intellectual training" for what is likely a one day trip.

I guess this is like anything else, the beginning stages will be crude and expensive (think computers), but eventually become affordable and much more streamlined.
