Better Place CEO Shai Agassi: With 1 billion cars by 2015, electric car has built-in audience

By | July 16, 2010, 12:18 AM PDT

Three years ago, when he was still in his 30s, Shai Agassi was in line to become the CEO of SAP, one of the biggest software companies in the world.

But in March of 2007, he left.

He’d been thinking about how to get the world off oil, he told a packed meeting of the Churchill Club in Silicon Valley Thursday night, but he found the idea so daunting that he started thinking instead about what it was that motivated ordinary people to buy cars.

Cheapness and convenience, he decided. So he started a company, Better Place, which has raised $550 million in venture capital and other private funding and is a little more than halfway through a four-year plan to build and test what Agassi hopes will be a worldwide network for charging electric cars.

So far, there’s a charging network in Copenhagen; a partnership with Renault-Nissan; a demonstration center and several deals to electrify fleets of corporate cars in Israel, where Agassi lives; a memorandum of understanding with Chery, a car company in China; and an electric taxi project in Tokyo, where taxi drivers can get their batteries changed in under a minute. (See the video below)

Electric cars need to be able to make three trips on a single charge, Agassi said — that way the driver has the flexibility to decide whether to plug in at home or at work.

He gets a little nervous when he thinks about Better Place’s future, though. The company’s plan calls for a 10X growth in electric car infrastructure every year, which Agassi figures will be needed to keep up with demand as the world turns away from oil — but no company has ever grown that fast.

He got another challenge from former President Bill Clinton, who told him that electric cars have to be as cheap as the car the average American buys now — an eight-year-old Ford or GM that’s almost dead when it’s driven off the lot.

Agassi is counting on help from China, which he believes is trying to kill the U.S. car industry. When China sets a standard for electric cars, which he expects will happen in 12 to 18 months, the U.S. will suddenly realize what a mistake it’s been to allow Americans to buy such low-priced gasoline and will beat China’s standard, he believes, because the U.S. is better than China at innovating. Agassi’s also betting that battery technology will continue to improve by 8 percent each year.

As for GE’s new WattStation — the lollipop-like electric car charger that SmartPlanet’s Andrew Nusca wrote about this week — Agassi says car chargers are going to be a huge business.

He predicts that electric car has a built-in consumer base with 1 billion vehicles on the road by 2015.

Here are some other numbers from Agassi:

- 1 Better Place battery swapping station in 2009, growing to 10 in 2010, 100 in 2011, 1,000 in 2012, and, assuming China and/or the U.S. push electric car standards, 100,000 battery swapping stations in 2013

- 500 million car charging stations in the U.S. by 2015 — drivers will need one at work and one at home

- At $1,000 per station, car charging is a $500 billion industry

Here’s the basis for Better Place’s electric taxi experiment in Tokyo:

Editor’s note: This article originally quoted Agassi as predicting 1 billion affordable electric cars by 2015. That statement is incorrect. He actually said that 1 billion cars would be on the road by 2015, and that the “beauty of this industry is that we’re starting where the consumer has already bought in.” The quote and the headline have been amended, and we’ve added our own video of Agassi’s presentation. We regret the error.

1B electric cars by 2015? Not a chance!! There probably haven't been 1 billion cars built in the entire history of the world to date. Now, if he means 1B electric car MILES, then maybe...

The US auto industry thinks we need electrified versions of our current cars. In reality a small 2 seater economical under 40 mph - 50 km range vehicle with few frills is all many need in urban areas. A common propulsion/battery system shared amongst manufacturers would bring the costs down and likely allow for local manufacturers to set up in vacant plants allowing for more choice in styles and features. Government regs for safety are designed to protect us against the SUV's that roam our streets which adds unneeded costs if you can limit where the EVS can operate.

Will never happen in the USA. The American consumer is too stupid
to realize what is good for them, the politicians in a two party system
will never want to make it happen. In Europe, yes, The Netherlands'
public buys small cars. The Germans will, if the cars are fast
enough and gas is expensive enough.
The better solution is to add $1 to the price of gas in the US. pay off
the debt, buy up all SUV's and destroy them. Yes, this was a real
plan under Clinton.

This looks so great! But then I wonder how well this sort of thing would work in Green Bay Wisconsin on a February day, with snow, slush, ice, deicer and whatever else might be on the underside of the car. I can imagine a straightforward cord plug that would go into a socket for recharge, but swapping out batteries like this seems to call for more neatness than one can expect on the streets of any place I have ever lived.

The Better Place model is the wrong direction. It adds expense to a already expensive proposition. I think we need to plug into standard outlets.

Like the Green Bay use case!
Does the range of these theoretical vehicles include enough power for keeping us warm in the winter? Most of us still drive to work in climates far less balmy than Silicon Valley.

And it's more than the cost of the vehicle. Is anyone investing in the infrastructure to treat the massive battery waste / disposal / recycling required for a billion of these little wonders?

When will we find out how much a "charge" costs? If it's $10 to go another 40 miles, that's hardly competitive with an SUV on $5 gasoline.

Milliion, Billiion, Gazilion
In days when we have trillion $ deficits & terabyte HDs, it's easy to speak of a billion cars, BUT, in a world with only ~10 million cars built per year, a billion will take 100 years

Way more cars than you think
In this world, annual global production of passenger cars has been 40 million or more for quite a while, reaching almost 55 million in 2007. You'd have to go back several decades to drop to only 10 million

Good article. My only concern is the battery infrastructure within the US. The infrastructure is not in place yet. You cannot pull up to a battery station and fill up. Additionally, batteries that are in the electric car will need to be replaced. Those batteries are very expensive.

I am excited to see this come about. We need the infrastructure in place for this to really take off.

I will be one of the folks in line to get an electric car.

How about just a CHEAP scooter or electrified bicycle capable of getting a full-sized middle-aged American man (i.e., 220 lbs, 100 kgs) to work and back during nice weather? The up-front cost for such an item in the U.S. is so ridiculously high that you never recoup your investment.

RE: Better Place CEO Shai Agassi: 1 billion affordable electric cars by 2015
TWO BIG QUESTIONS
A. How much coal or ? needed to be added to systems to generate power for them, basic law of physics about power need to roll the things apply as they did in gas engines. So how much coal or ?
B. What is the plan/cost/pay for/ etc to dispose of batteries when junked out, a tax at purchase, yearly on plates, or what, perhaps one like used when you buy new tires, etc. We do NOT need a lot Lithium (rather toxic stuff) or ? batteries dumped in equal of our current auto junk yards.

Not trying to rain on anyone's parade but would feel better if above addressed now.

NO ONE seems to want to address the above, wonder why?

@hmmmmm! If this guy didn't already have a gasoline powered car he would be telling us that it is impossible because there would be no way to get that much gasoline and the pollution would be killing us. Well, he would be right, a little bit, come to think of it.

A) Right we need renewable energy (not coal) to move forward. As a means of replacing gasoline, renewable electricity is cheap. That is an easy one.

B) Batteries. Dude to start with, you car has a battery today. It contains lead and acid. Isn't that a big problem? Well, it was until we dealt with it. Now lead acid batteries are 99% or more recycles. The same will be true with Lithium Ion.

RE: Better Place CEO Shai Agassi: 1 billion affordable electric cars by 2015
Huh? Is he for real? How the heck are you going to charge a billion electric cars? Off of the grid? We can't even get a new electrical plant built in 10 years....how the heck will we charge the extra drain on the already taxed grid! Solar? Hahaha~ very funny at less than 19% efficiency, you would need a solar field larger than the state of Nevada running 24 hours a day...and we all know that the sun only shines less than half that time! Nuclear? Sierra club will pitch a fit! Natural gas? sure, but at what cost! Wind? See solar! So HOW? How will we charge these cars...we are currently in the grip of a heat wave here in the east coast...temps soaring into the triple digits...everyone who has an Air Conditioner is running it! And every state up and down the eastern seaboard is suffering from rolling blackouts and brownouts. They say that an electric car uses the same amount of electricity as an AC unit...WE CAN'T EVEN RUN THE AC UNITS WE ALREADY HAVE! How the heck are we going to function with an additional billion AC units? For this to happen, we need to increase our power capacity at least 5 fold! And if this happens, electricity will no longer be cheaper than gasoline! The power companies will roll their new power plants cost to build into their rates...and we will *WISH* for the days when we ran on gasoline!
And for my next point...federal, state and municipal governments rely on taxes gathered from sales of gasoline, oil and diesel...take these fuels away and what happens to the taxes? Already, some local governments are crying about the loss in tax dollars by people driving less and less...Will the tax just go away? Ha, keep on dreaming...no, they will just tax electricity at the same rate or even higher than gasoline! The average price per kilowatt in the united states is about 16 cents...for an average household, this is about $150-$250/month. Can you afford electricity if it was 30 cents per kilowatt? or 50 cents per kilowatt? (monthly $300 to $1000/month)
Do you pay that much in gasoline? probably not...think people before you start jumping on this electric car bandwagon!

Calm down and think it through
I hope you've learned something in the year since you made this post. If not, I'll do my best to educate you.
1.) Agassi was misquoted - the 1 billion number was for ICEs worldwide. It'll take decades to replace even 50% of those with EVs / hybrids.
2.) The vast majority of cars are driven at most a couple hours each day and are parked the rest of the time. Chances are you run your AC much longer than that during the hot months.
3.) Agassi's plan has always included smart charging and Vehicle2Grid - so the car is charged at the rate the utility can bear ( preferably at night when rates are lowest ), it can be used as a backup power supply or to balance intermittent power sources.
4.) To replace every passenger ICE in the US with a full EV TOMORROW, would require only about 40% additional power generation, if that EV has a battery 25-50% larger than the Nissan Leaf and fully discharged / recharged 300 days a year.
5.) Several studies have shown that the average EV powered ENTIRELY by coal is equivalent to the cleanest ICE. Even that would be an improvement because you would no longer have the ground-level ozone produced by ICEs in population centers and all emissions would be centralized at power plants where it would be far easier to capture or mitigate.
6.) A dramatic switch to EVs would break OPEC's back, saving untold billions of dollars for the western world. That would free up more than enough capital for an expansion of nuclear power and renewable energy.
7.) The average US household DOES pay about $200-300 monthly for gas (and rising) and the average residential price is 11 cents per kW-hr, not 16 cents as you claimed. Can't speak for the local level but a significant reduction in gas usage should result in big savings for Washington if it starts cutting that stupidly enormous military budget.
As for taxes on electricity,

RE: Better Place CEO Shai Agassi: 1 billion affordable electric cars by 2015
TEch ed, seems we agree but briggs is rather other worldlier about reality. Just go get some renewable and plug it in..and same for Lith and other exoctic batteries. just do like we do with rather small acid types.

Seems many are on the "wow look at this" and move on down the road.with not much planning, or any sense of responsibility. A billion batteries are going to have what done by whom when we junk or replace them? And no coal, nuke or oil/gas needed, just set up a wind machine or two, shut off all other appliances, and off we go. Sounds great but I want to see some planning for exactly how we handle the battery's, as know of lot of super fund sites where taxpayer footing bill. Do wish some of the children would read a bit of history, we cannot even clean up dry wells, at sea or on land.. and billion batteries needing how many amps?

The thing may be feasible, but a bit of "The details" need be added to support.

The taxi demonstration shows potential. If we assume that large taxi companies buy into the process because it can save them maintenance costs, then we'll see a rapid growth in major cities. I expect the companies would buy their own charging stations, and a few entrepreneurs would build stations for the independents.

As for the non-commercial use, that will take some doing.

RE: Better Place CEO Shai Agassi: 1 billion affordable electric cars by 2015
1 billion by 2025 might be possible if we add a significant tax on gas to subsidize electrics, but even that would be stretch. In the US, most electrics won't even start hitting the market until 2011.

To be competitive, an affordable electric car will need to be priced under $20k and until production effeciences improve, that will require subsidies which could be funded with a surcharge on gasoline.

How much will these battery powered cars really cost? Right now the car market just keeps releasing new $30,000+ cars every day and yet they just don't get it - we need cheap no frill 4 wheel transportation for under $15 grand which we'll never see. Meanwhile I'm scared to death about how we'll power this fantastic idea that's nothing more than a pipe dream.

RE: Better Place CEO Shai Agassi: 1 billion affordable electric cars by 2015
As log as gas is cheap we won't change. Even if they build a billion new electric vehicles. We won't change until it becomes cheaper to do so. That's the problem with Capitalism, it is driven by money and greed. So what if our atmosphere becomes so poluted that we can't breathe it anymore. I can foresee a human respirator business boom coming down the road..... right behind the fleet of gas guzzlers.

One other point. All of these electric cars will not use poluting fuels.... but what of the coal fired plants that will be needed to produce the power to keep them recharged? Are we not robbing Peter to pay Paul?

Until we get on renewable green energy production there will be no change in air quality, nor the CO2 levels we pump into the atmosphere. Face the truth. We are slowly poisoning ourselves.

Please keep me informed about developments. I'm ready to buy such a car as soon as it is available. I suspect I could find another 100 buyers within a month. My main concern is how far I would have to travel in the DC area to find a station that could replace my battery. I suppose China will be the first to mass-manufacture these cars and build the stations, and become the dominant economic power in the world. Surely some billionaire in the US will see the profit that can be made and finance this new industry.
