The second 787 took off 20 minutes after its scheduled departure time of 8:45 a.m. PT this morning. Here’s the video which is more dramatic than first flight of a week. The audio on the takeoff is much louder than first flight a week ago with ZA002 quickly disappearing into the clouds after leaving the ground.
ZA002 also climbed more steeply than ZA001 in the first flight which lifted off and quickly leveled to stay visible low in the sky for several minutes.
From the radio banter, it sounds like the plane after takeoff experienced a hot brake at 1,200 degrees. Brakes and wheels were left down to cool and not cycled up until well into the flight. I am confirming that the “Boeing 002″ on the radio is indeed 787 ZA002, but my source tells me it is.
As far as I know, the plane is still in the air, 20 minutes longer so far than scheduled. A chase plane reported it wanted more video of the “dragging brake” which was wheel “aft inboard #7…” Also, a “persistent” vibration in the floor was reported in the radio banter between the cockpit and air traffic control.
Updated 2:25 p.m. ET: “BOE2″ as the second 787 test flight was called, landed at Boeing Field at 11:16 a.m. PT, an hour and two minutes later than what was filed in the flight plan, according to Flight Tracker. The plane took off at 9:05 a.m PT, five minutes earlier than the scheduled 9:10 a.m. PT departure. Total flight time: 2 hours and 11 minutes.
