Which cities have the worst Friday evening commute?

The 10 cities you don't want to work in if you have to drive home today.
Written by Tyler Falk, Contributor

It's Friday! Congratulations, you made it to the weekend! You just have one more trying task ahead of you before you can truly celebrate: the commute home.

Unfortunately, Friday evening is the worst of the worst when it comes to commuting. Everyone is in a rush to get away from the office and get their weekend started. Plus, researchers found that Friday is the worst traffic day and has the worst evening traffic. Bummer.

Why exactly is Friday evening traffic so bad? Governing Magazine reports that it's a combination of people leaving town for the weekend and others running errands before the weekend starts.

But some cities have it worse than others.

Governing created an index ranking of the cities with the worst Friday evening commutes using data from Inrix. Among other things, the data includes the number of minutes you can expect to add to a typical Friday evening commute compared to a typical 30 minute commute during the rest of the week. 100 metro areas in the U.S. were measured. Here are the 10 with the worst Friday evening commute:

  1. Los Angeles
  2. San Francisco
  3. Honolulu
  4. Austin, Texas
  5. Bridgeport, Conn.
  6. Seattle
  7. New York City
  8. Portland, Ore.
  9. Washington, D.C.
  10. Chicago

It's probably too late to say this, but if you live in one of these cities maybe you should have worked from home today.
