The Morning Briefing: Tourism trends

By | June 11, 2012, 12:16 AM PDT

“The Morning Briefing” is SmartPlanet’s daily roundup of must-reads from the web. This morning we’re reading about trends in tourism.

1.) Space tourists can hop on a flight in 2014? Thrill seekers looking for the ultimate rocket ride may soon turn that dream into a reality aboard a new suborbital spaceship, a winged rocket plane slated to start launching space tourists from California and a tiny Caribbean island by 2014.

2.) Spain tourism boost fizzles amid deepening recession. Spanish registered unemployment in May fell less than a year earlier as a deepening recession in the euro area’s fourth-largest economy damped hiring in the run up to the country’s peak tourism season.

3.) Haiti’s tourism makeover: From devastation to destination. Haiti, known mainly for its natural disasters, starving citizens and government corruption scandals, is hoping to leave its tumultuous past behind and re-invent itself as an investment and tourism destination.

4.) Religious tourism on the rise, says church in Wales. Although only anecdotal evidence is available, church leaders say there is a renewed interest in holy sites.

5.) Chinese tourists flocking to Australia? Chinese tourists are flocking to Australia in record numbers, injecting $2.8 billion into the economy last year.
