The Morning Briefing: The Military and defense

By | March 28, 2012, 1:40 AM PDT

“The Morning Briefing” is SmartPlanet’s daily roundup of must-reads from the web. This morning we’re reading about military organisations and defense.

1.) Obama explains ‘flexibility’ on missile defense. President Obama has attempted to clarify his suggestion that he’ll have “more flexibility” after the election in November to take on the controversial proposal to build a missile-defense system in Europe.

2.) Pentagon to seek more funds for Israel’s missile defenses. According to the U.S. Defense Department’s spokesman, the Pentagon plans to request additional funds from Congress to buy missile-defense systems for Israel. The funds are on top of $205 million requested last year to buy additional defense systems for Israeli cities.

3.) Report of bombing plot sends the Afghan Defense Ministry into a near lockdown. The Afghan Defense Ministry went into a near-total lockdown on Tuesday after the discovery of 10 suicide vests and the arrests of more than a dozen Afghan soldiers suspected of plotting to attack the ministry. The would-be fighters also planned to blow up commuter buses for government employees.

4.) LulzSec Reborn claims military dating site hack. Picking up where LulzSec left off, a new group of hacktivists calling itself LulzSec Reborn recently announced that it had hacked a military dating website and released usernames and passwords for 170,937 subscribers.

5.) Veteran: Military spouses sometimes kept in dark about combat injuries, stress. Are families members protected from the true extent of injuries, mental and physical, attained in combat?

Bonus: Military academies hold first gay pride events.

Bonus: At least 1,788 U.S. military deaths in Afghanistan since 2001.

Military, military, military.
Kill, kill. Shoot, kill. Kill, assassinate. Murder, shoot, maim. Destroy, infiltrate. Insurgents, invasion, evil. Bombs, Guantanamo, 'friendly fire'. Missiles, 'nucular' weapons, and the everlasting WMD. Defense, offense, nonsense.

Aren't people getting tired of all the killing in the world and the ridiculously huuuuge military spending, when there are millions of more important things to use the money on. Like food, healthcare, fusion energy, justice and so on. But no, the military has to have it's money so that they can kill people, blow up their houses and burn or poison their crops instead.

Please keep in mind. I respect you opinion, but..
Guns and missles and everything you rant about do not kill people.

In the end PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE.

It all started when the first cave man hit another on the head with a rock to steal his food.

More people were killed by civilians in the cities of NY, LA and Washigton DC in the past 10 years than in the fighting in Iraq.

Get people to stop being killing fools and the weapons become expensive fireworks shows on holidays.

It's called DEFENSE for a Reason
Nature gave us a survival instinct and mankind has needed to defend itself since the beginning of time. Politics is the biggest player here. Murder and assasination have always played a part in politics. Govenments developed militias to protect their interests. The choice to be made is how you want to live your life.Without our military we would be subjected to God knows what atrocities, as other people are being mistreated all over the world. If you are willing to stand idly by and allow yourself to taken advantage of, that's your business. I and my family will serve to protect you despite yourself. If you don't want that, please pin a target on your shirt and we'll get out of the way.

Not quite so...
@Hates Idiots. People without guns and weapons kill very few people. If all You have are Your fists, then You think twice before attacking anyone, because You know You will be hurt Yourself, whatever the outcome. Not so when someone has a gun, then they think they are as invincible as God (or almost). Just compare Britain and the U.S. to see how much difference the availability of guns changes the situation. (But Your last sentence is spot on).

@ZiaStar: As to the word 'defence': it's rather strange how many of the defending battles have been fought abroad thoughout the history of mankind. Todays 'defending' wars go so far as to kidnap people who are defending their own homes and placing them in compounds in areas where they don't even get the most basic human rights, like Guantanamo. Many of those who were locked up there were later found to be innocent people who were just defending their own homes (with some exceptions, granted). But what they have had to suffer through has made them almost unhuman, with no chance of ever being able to live a normal life anymore. A high price to pay for the modern american 'justice'. The U.S., which used to stand as the leader in human rights, suddenly changed to even worse than Saddam's regime. Why? Why did they allow themself to behave in such a way? 9.11 is not an excuse, because those terrorists were not from Iraq, and the american military knew this. It will take many decades, maybe even a century to build up americas lost image and trust again. The goodies became as bad as the baddies. Remember Lynndie England? Even as an exception her behaviour was unforgivable. And even today there are many americans who don't understand that. They still think that they represent the 'greatest country on the earth'. But sadly, they are very mistaken. The greatest countries in the world today are perhaps Canada or Australia, when it comes to justice and human rights.
When it comes to mistreating people all over the world: it is always either the military or religion that does it.
I have been in some difficult situations, but I have never had to resort to violence, not even when my opponent has had a weapon. Because that's just it: as soon as someone has a weapon they are very eager to use it.
Concidering how much we could accomplish if we were nice to each other, it's incredible that so few even try.

@Dukhalion

Just to clear up any illusions you have about Australia's justice and human rights record I suggest you have a look at the 2 websites below.

I just wonder when they will be sued or shut down.

If it wasn't for Western military forces,
(Great Britain, Canada, US, Australia, France (yes, even France), etc.) with their nuclear deterrent, you would most likely be suffering under Soviet or Chinese domination. It's a violent and nasty world we live in and the sad fact that evil people exist and gain power means we must be able to defend our freedoms. And yes, sometimes that means going on the offense in lands far away. Better to eliminate them where they live than to have them make a mess of our countries.
