The Morning Briefing: The broadband debate

By | August 23, 2012, 1:57 AM PDT

“The Morning Briefing” is SmartPlanet’s daily roundup of must-reads from the web. This morning we’re reading about broadband deployment and services.

1.) Why U.S. broadband is stuck in the slow lane. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) raised tough questions this week about the state of American broadband in its eighth annual “Broadband Progress Report.”

2.) Broadband: taking the right road to a high-speed Britain. Investing in better internet links is all very well, but we should also be looking at where this hi-tech society will take us.

3.) Comment: A little knowledge makes for bad broadband debate. One of the most frustrating aspects to the debate about future directions for Australia’s broadband infrastructure is the complete obsession with headline download and upload speeds that many people will never use at economic price points, to the detriment of any discussion about other key aspects of the Internet experience.

4.) New Zealand’s broadband muddle. New Zealand’s broadband network has been held up as an example for Australia. But is it as good as some might think?

5.) U.K. aims for the fastest broadband in Europe by 2015. Britain’s culture secretary has repeated his ambition of Britain having the fastest broadband on the continent within three years.

Why is US Broadband in the "Slow Lane"?
That answer is simple. I refuse to buy Cable TV or a Land-line from MediaCom, one of a handful of "Media Providers", as they continually jack up the cost of the only thing I want, which IS Broadband. They Lobby against initiatives to bring it to Rural America, because then us city dwellers might be able to get better for less, as without the "hooks" of Cable TV and Phone Service, why would I keep them?

I wouldn't-they no that, so as long as their Market Hegemony is their main priority, Broadband innovation is off the table until regulatory agencies decide to do their job, recognize that all this is no different than the the old AT&T monster they broke up years ago. Land Lines are dinosaurs and headed for history, and if TV Service were either separated from cable OR fully integrated as a single service it would end this conundrum.

Don't hold your breath...Ted Turner and his little girlfriends aren't out of steps to stall it all quite yet.
