The Morning Briefing: Space and shuttles

By | April 3, 2012, 2:17 AM PDT

“The Morning Briefing” is SmartPlanet’s daily roundup of must-reads from the web. This morning we’re reading about space exploration.

1.) Two NASA space shuttles head to new homes this month. A retired NASA space shuttle and an early prototype for the winged spacecraft will make their final big journeys this month, traveling to the cities that house their museum retirement homes.

2.) Senate appropriators offer rebuke of commercial crew. Lawmakers took aim on NASA’s commercial crew initiative last week in a continuing narrative of questioning as the agency fights to maintain the program’s relevance.

3.) High joblessness in the home of U.S. space flight. With the end of the space shuttle program, Brevard County, Fla., lost its largest employer, and Kennedy Space Center workers lost good jobs that made them proud. Scott Pelley reports.

4.) The sounds Of Mars and Venus are revealed. In a world first, the sounds of Mars and Venus are revealed as part of a planetarium show in Hampshire this Easter.

5.) Space ‘Sailboat’ could offer solar storm early warning system. With a planned launch in 2014, a developed sail might be able to fly a satellite close to the sun to study solar flares — and alert scientists when one is incoming.
