The Morning Briefing: Solar energy, grids and footprints

By | April 30, 2012, 10:30 PM PDT

“The Morning Briefing” is SmartPlanet’s daily roundup of must-reads from the web. This morning we’re reading about the solar power industry.

1.) Solar energy co. LDK posts $589M 4th-qtr loss. Chinese solar module manufacturer LDK Solar Co. Ltd. said Monday that it posted a $588.7 million fiscal fourth-quarter loss on a steep drop in demand for solar products and sliding prices. Shares sank 8 percent.

2.) How BrightSource’s solar power plant reduces its footprint. The $2.2 billion Ivanpah solar-power plant is expected to be the largest concentrated-solar plant the world. It creates electricity not with black photovoltaic solar panels, but with thousands of mirrors, called heliostats, that bounce the sun’s rays onto a tower.

3.) Burlington Press, a printing company to run its business on solar power. Burlington Press, a commercial printing and marketing services company in Burlington City, NJ has completed a solar project to power their building with the sun.

4.) Strombeck Properties unveils new 225kW solar power system in Arcata. The Solar Company and Strombeck Properties are excited to announce two brand-new SunPower solar power systems installed to power two apartment complexes, consisting of nearly 250 individual units and two community laundry areas.

5.) SolarCity plans IPO. Two weeks ago, solar power plant company BrightSource Energy abruptly canceled plans for an initial public stock offering, convinced that investors currently have little appetite for new solar shares. Now SolarCity Corp. will test that theory.
