The Morning Briefing: Smart materials

By | August 20, 2012, 11:26 PM PDT

“The Morning Briefing” is SmartPlanet’s daily roundup of must-reads from the web. This morning we’re reading about smart materials.

1.) Wearable electronics pave way for smart surgeon gloves. New wearable electronics could become smart surgical gloves that allow surgeons to feel and do everything using their fingertips. Such electronics could even include electronic “socks” wrapped snugly around a patient’s heart to monitor cardiac health.

2.) Smart materials improve earthquake-resistant bridge design. We need to find ways to minimize seismic effects on bridges, both by improving existing bridges and refining specifications and construction materials for future bridges.

3.) Aerospace materials used to build endless pipeline. Mo Ehsani, Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering at the University of Arizona, has designed a new, lightweight underground pipe he says could transform the pipeline construction industry.

4.) Bamboo: The new super construction material. Researchers from the University’s BRE Centre for Innovative Construction Materials, in collaboration with a team from Coventry University and the University of Cambridge, are exploring the use of bamboo for the widespread construction of homes.

5.) Grafoid Inc. and CVD Equipment corporation sign joint IP development agreement. The Companies believe that this collaborative relationship has the potential to speed up the commercialization of graphene and provide additional opportunities for both companies.
