"The Morning Briefing" is SmartPlanet's daily roundup of must-reads from the web. This morning we're reading about tax and finance updates.

.) Obama pleased with Congress over payroll tax cut, but don't stop yet. President Obama has taken a moment to praise Congress after approving a $144 billion package raised in order to extend the payroll tax cut and unemployment insurance until the end of 2012 -- but he wants more to be done.

.) Romney wants 'flatter, simpler' tax system. Republican Mitt Romney has said he wants a 'flatter and simpler' tax system in preparation for an important economic address coming up within the next few days.

.) NJ Gov 'Why Not Cut Income Taxes' Christie. Gov. Chris Christie presented a $32.1bn budget on Tuesday for the next fiscal year, which includes elements of tax relief for NJ residents. Christie has called for an increase in social aid, housing assistance and an income tax cut.

.) The $10-Billion-a-Month 'Holiday' this country cannot afford. 'Faced with our record $15 trillion federal deficit and last year's embarrassing downgrade of Treasury securities, guess what politicians have decided to do? Pile on more debt!' This author's analysis concerns reducing the social security tax.

.) Eurozone crisis live: Greece prepares for bailout protests. Only several days in to the Greece bailout agreement, things are already beginning to unravel. The package for 130bn euros has been agreed, but there are many that believe it will make the country no better off financially in the future. Demonstrations in Athens are expected from 2pm GMT / 4pm EET.
