1.) Majority of ‘pink slime’ production suspended. The maker of ‘pink slime’ — also known as ‘lean, finely textured beef’ — suspended operations Monday at all but one plant where the beef ingredient is made, acknowledging that recent public uproar over the product has cost the company business.

2.) AVMA responds to court ruling on use of antibiotics in food production. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) reaffirmed its support of the responsible use of antibiotics in food animals after a federal court ruling demanded that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) start proceedings to withdraw approval of certain uses of antibiotics used in food production.
3.) Developing countries see sharp rise in meat consumption. As the world population rises, the demand for meat, eggs and dairy products is soaring in developing countries. The Worldwatch Institute warns that without safeguards the demand could strain the environment and pose public health risks.
4.) Food processing CEO facing jail after guilty plea in tomato paste racketeering case. A former U.S. food processing company CEO is facing up to seven years in prison after pleading guilty to racketeering and price fixing charges relating to the sale of processed tomatoes.
5.) Researcher: How to make food supplies secure and sustainable. Could proper crop nutrition and sharing of knowledge and technology between developing and developed countries can help address the food needs of the planet’s growing population?
