By | April 19, 2012, 12:36 AM PDT

“The Morning Briefing” is SmartPlanet’s daily roundup of must-reads from the web. This morning we’re reading about EV manufacture and advances.

1.) Electric Cars: What’s Available in 2012? [Video]

2.) Q1 electric car battery prices drop 14 percent on year. The average price of an electric vehicle-grade battery fell 14 percent year-on-year to $689 per kilowatt hour in the first quarter as manufacturing capacity outstripped demand, a report by Bloomberg New Energy Finance said on Tuesday.

3.) The 2013 Chevrolet Volt upgrade. If the Chevrolet Volt is a car that you’ve had your eye on for a while, you will be pleased to learn that the 2013 Chevy Volt will be getting several upgrades, namely in the form of a “hold” mode and additional safety features.

4.) Ford’s first all-electric car, the Focus Electric, gives a taste of the future. Ford is in the process of making big changes to its overall strategy, and its first all-electric car, the Focus Electric, helps show how the company is evolving.

5.) Electric Vehicles are good for the environment & save you money. The Union of Concerned Scientists has completed what is the most comprehensive study to date on the financial and environmental costs (or, more appropriately, savings) of electric vehicles.
