The Morning Briefing: Data protection

By | August 8, 2012, 1:55 AM PDT

“The Morning Briefing” is SmartPlanet’s daily roundup of must-reads from the web. This morning we’re reading about data protection in modern businesses.

1.) Online gambling industry ‘ignores’ data protection and privacy laws. Simon Davies, founder of Privacy International, has blasted the online gaming industry for inadequately protecting gamblers’ privacy and failing to adhere to basic principles of data protection.

2.) Data protection in the cloud — are we fooling ourselves? How many organizations currently transfer sensitive data to the cloud? Who should be responsible for looking after that data? Are organizations capable of protecting their data once it has been transferred to the cloud?

3.) Facebook’s facial recognition to be probed in Norway. The Norwegian Data Protection Agency is planning to launch an investigation into Facebook’s facial recognition feature this fall, a spokesman said on Monday.

4.) New data protection law should cover search engines and social networks says EU committee. Search engines, social networks and certain cloud computing services should be brought within the scope of the forthcoming European data protection reforms, according to an EU consultative body.

5.) Irish watchdog aborts talks with Europe vs. Facebook, via text. Ireland’s Office of the Data Protection Commissioner says it will determine, by October, whether Facebook will face legal action under European privacy laws.
