1.) New EU data protection laws could prove expensive for UK smart meter rollout. They will “directly impact the UK smart meter rollout” and a “much more prescriptive regime” will place stringent requirements on suppliers, energy firms heard this week.

2.) Facebook’s push for child users a data jackpot? Not so fast. Now that Facebook is exploring ways to allow children under 13 to officially use its service, the company faces two critical questions if it moves ahead with any plans.

3.) Quest’s NetVault XA: Unified data protection for physical, virtual, cloud environments. Quest Software on Tuesday unveiled its NetVault XA (Extended Architecture), a new data protection platform that brings several of its current storage software applications under a single unified management system.

4.) Angara, Philippines: Data Privacy Act targets leaks. Sen. Edgardo Angara on Friday denied that Senate Bill No. 2965, or the Data Privacy Act targets journalists who publish information leaked electronically or through the Internet.

5.) HP releases Data Protector 7. HP has unveiled HP Data Protector 7, a software solution that helps businesses manage the explosive growth of data with advanced backup and recovery capabilities.
