The Morning Briefing: Cybersecurity

By | August 10, 2012, 12:43 AM PDT

“The Morning Briefing” is SmartPlanet’s daily roundup of must-reads from the web. This morning we’re reading about cybersecurity.

1.) Cybersecurity too crucial to leave to politicos? It’s looking that way. With an election looming, parochial partisan politics trumped national security — shocker, I know — leaving cybersecurity policy firmly in midair.

2.) Gauss virus: Stuxnet-like cyberweapon hits Middle East banks. Virus comes from the same ‘factory’ as Stuxnet and can wait to unleash attack till it reaches the right target, Kaspersky reports.

3.) Inexcusable failure to move on cyber threats. Not the nation’s electrical grid — not yet anyway — but rather legislation intended to protect it and other vital U.S. infrastructure from cyber attacks by hackers or terrorists.

4.) Obama considering executive-branch action on cybersecurity. President Barack Obama is considering executive-branch action on U.S. cybersecurity after Congress failed to pass legislation to protect national security assets, a White House aide said.

5.) Let the user beware: You’re responsible for your cybersecurity. It is said that a wise man learns from the mistakes of others. If that is the case, the U.S. would be wise to learn from the scary story of Mat Honan, a senior writer at the technology news publication Wired.
