The Morning Briefing: Consumer Bill of Rights, companies in limbo, data protection

1.) Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights: Ignores 'elephant in the room'? According to Indiana University information security expert Fred H. Cate, the intentions behind Obama's 'Consumer Bill of Rights' are goodnd somewhat noble, but may be doomed to failure. The reason? As the bill places power in to the hands of the public, they may not know how to use it effectively or responsibly. The legislation would give consumers the right to exercise more stringent control over personal data and how it is both collected and used.

2.) Europe and US to clash over online data protection. Will the Consumer Bill of Rights create a transatlantic battle concerning privacy and data laws? There is likely to be a struggle between the different philosophies of the U.S. and Europe, and in turn this may impact those who have not yet formulated their own stances.

3.) Dell builds upon data centre recovery gap with AppAssure deal. Dell has recently acquired backup and replication software maker AppAssure Software, further diving in to the cloud infrastructure and service market.

4.) Lawyer: Companies ‘left in limbo’ by new data protection regime. An interview with Data Protection lawyer Christopher Kuner, who is a partner with law firm Hunton & Williams Brussels office, answers questions put by Euractiv's Jeremy Fleming over new data protection laws from a legal perspective.

5.) BSA calls for global change in data protection laws. The Business Software Alliance (BSA) has claimed the growth of the worldwide cloud computing market could be scuppered unless unified, global data protection laws are put in place.
