The Morning Briefing: 3D technology

By | July 6, 2012, 12:58 AM PDT

“The Morning Briefing” is SmartPlanet’s daily roundup of must-reads from the web. This morning we’re reading about three-dimensional technology.

1.) The fractured landscape of 3D tech. Veteran industry analyst Jon Peddie says the current state of 3D can best be summed up as five incompatible growing markets on 13 different platforms.

2.) What good are 3D maps, anyway? The upcoming 3D depictions of the world’s buildings by Google, and presumably Apple, may be the next big technological achievement for both companies. But so far, no one has answered the key question: really, what good is it?

3.) 3D NAND chips are going to make high-capacity SSDs a reality. A company called Applied Materials has announced that a new etching system will allow it to take 3D transistors from scientific dream to reality.

4.) Sweet! 3D printed vascular networks made of sugar. University of Pennsylvania researchers have developed 3D printed templates of filament networks which can be used to rapidly create vasculature and improve the function of engineered living tissues.

5.) Undercover tech: Inside a 3D smartphone. In terms of technology per cubic inch smartphones are one of the most advanced and intricate devices humans use on a daily basis.
