The home of the future will be intelligent, connected and efficient enough to save energy and water.
At least that’s how it looked at the 2010 Pacific Coast Builders’ Conference in San Francisco, where CNET sharpshooter James Martin visited to take a peek at the latest innovations in water-sipping bath fixtures, solar panels, smart appliances, smart grid devices, insulation and roofing.
Some of what he saw at the conference:
- Energy-efficient faucet aerators.
- Tamko roof-embedded solar panels.
- GE smart grid-connected washers, dryers, microwaves, refrigerators, and water heaters.
- Web- and mobile-based smart grid management software.
- UltraTouch 100% post-consumer recycled cotton insulation.
- Fusion Solar UniSolar thin-film photovoltaic laminate.
He writes:
As standards and systems begin to emerge, these individual elements will one day come together to build the home of the future, an intelligently managed, smoothly running home that harvests energy, manages systems, and controls use in the best ways to fit our lives.
