SunPower to build largest solar power system on U.S. govt. property

By | August 10, 2010, 8:40 AM PDT

SunPower on Tuesday said it will install a 15-megawatt solar power system on an Arizona Air Force base. The installation will be the largest at a U.S. government facility.

Under the deal, Sun Power will design and construct the solar installation at Luke Air Force Base in Glendale, Arizona.

The project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2011.

According to a statement, Arizona Public Service will own the system, but SunPower will maintain it. APS will sell electricity to Luke Air Force Base.

Construction starts in January pending site prep, permits and environmental assessments.

I don't see a problem as long as
1) Security is kept up and no one goes wandering.
2) Power is still available through the normal grid and backups.
3) Power purchased from the panels makes sense economically.
In other words, they buy power from the cheapest source.
4) The power company pays a reasonable rent for the land.

I would suspect it not a good idea to wander around US bases.
It said solar system. It could be a crapload of black pipes filled with anti-freeze. No bic lighter necessary. The water will stay hot
all night long. Over simplified for the simple.

RE: SunPower to build largest solar power system on U.S. govt. property
15 megawatts is only the PEAK power, which I presume is mid-day with the sun right overhead and no clouds in the sky. You cannot compare a 15 megawatts, peak power solar cell system with, for example a Diesel generator which would be available 24 and 7 as long as there's fuel available, except for scheduled (and I suppose, unscheduled) maintenance.

What I'd like to know is, how many kilowatt-hours per year can we reasonably expect to harvest from this system?

I'm so happy to see the government more and more embracing
the potential of the future of solar power. We simply need to
move away from fossil fuels as fast as possible. Luckily everyday
there are new breakthroughs in solar technology. Just the other
day I saw great video about a new solar technology
breakthrough that produced a solar cell that is not only cheap
and flexible but 10,000 times more efficient. I'll post a link to the
video if you want to see more for yourself.

Gee, I wonder how much we'll (yes those few of us who actually pay
taxes and pay for the blood suckers amongst us) pay per KW hour
used. Fifty, sixty cents??? What a great program?
