Stoplight progress indicator concept improves utility of traffic signals

By | December 1, 2009, 10:39 AM PST

For all of humanity’s technological innovations, traffic lights haven’t been updated much. A new stoplight design concept adds a progress indicator to calm drivers and give them more accurate feedback.

Designer Damjan Stanković aims to inform drivers how long they will rest at a stoplight with the Eko concept. Stanković spins the idea as an eco-friendly solution, suggesting that a driver can shut the vehicle’s engine off at a long light without fear that traffic may suddenly restart.

It also makes it much easier to figure out if a stoplight is stuck.

For now, it’s just a concept — but it’s an obvious step on the way to a smarter city.
