Solar roadway that generates heat, energy unveiled

By | March 22, 2010, 12:23 PM PDT

The future of America’s roads, streets and highways may hold a solar roadway that can generate heat to melt snow and electricity to power vehicles.

In what may be a prototype of an actual information superhighway, the Solar Roadway is made of a series of tough, glass-coated panels that use 6,192 light-emitting diodes each to illuminate themselves at night, generate electricity for vehicles, generate heat to melt ice and snow and carry within them cables for phone and Internet service.

Just how many panels would we need to replace all of America’s roads? A little more than five billion.

One problem for the system: it’s more expensive than oil-derived asphalt that’s used on motorways today. However, its makers insist that it lasts three times as long as typical pavement.

The other? Funding. With just over $6 billion in the Highway Trust Fund as of last month, there’s not much to go around.

Is the Solar Roadway the answer? I’m not so sure, but it’s proof that there’s a way to make our roads smarter.

RE: Solar roadway that generates heat, energy unveiled
I was thinking it would be cheaper to put a solar panel ontop of a pole with a cable thats layed under the road surface producing heat that would melt the snow and stop ice forming therefore keeping the busyiest roads clear and saving billions on road gritting. plus adding an infra -red laser beam set at 6ft intervals (like cats eyes)that shine on to an infra-red reciever below the electric motor or batteries(like the one's used on the television) to produce electricity to run an electric car -(laser beams could keep the batteries fully charged and traveling longer distances without having to stop and re-charge by conecting to the mains supply for at least 8 hours

Doesn't seem cost-effective to me
The "Solar Roadway" website says this panels will serve as both pavement and energy source. This seems like a needless combination of these two functions to me. Getting land for solar panels is not really a problem. And the economics of solar panels is greatly affected by the materials from which they are manufactured. Why should we have to make solar panels with delicate electronics in them that can stand up to an 18 wheel big rig?

It's a nifty idea, but what happens to the water that is created by the melting snow? When snow melts because it is warm outside, the water thrown up by passing vehicles is a problem. But if water is being created while it is still snowing and/or very cold out it could be very dangerous.
