Russia to build new commercial spaceport near China, report says

By | July 23, 2010, 6:28 AM PDT

Russia will invest 24.7 million rubles, or about $800 million USD, in a new spaceport designed for commercial space flight in the nation’s eastern lands that border with China, according to a new report.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said the spaceport is intended to ease its dependence on the Soviet-era Baikonur launch site it rents from Kazakhstan, reports the BBC.

The new structure, called the Vostochny cosmodrome, will be built near the town of Uglegorsk, located in Russia’s Amur Oblast region, which borders China. It’s slated to be operational by 2015.

While the spaceport won’t be used exclusively for commercial flight, it’s intended mostly for civilian launches.

It is planned to be mostly used for civilian launches and should be operational by 2015.

A few takeaways about the proposed project:

  • Up to 30,000 workers will be used to build the facility.
  • At 700 square kilometers, it will be smaller and more compact than the Baikonur facility.
  • It will be comprised of launch pads, a residential compound and research laboratories.

Russia also has plans for manned space flight, and hopes to do so at the new facility by 2018.

The nation is also investing in “a new generation of space vessels that could also be used for interplanetary flights,” such as to Mars, the BBC reports.

All America cares about for NASA is that we applaud the Muslims and make them feel good. We have definitely lost our exceptionalism in space and in world opinion.

AGree with tubabill. That is what we get for allowing an unqualified person to become president. Not that I voted for him...

No we believe everything Big Media says. And everything the current administration says. No need to find out for ourselves. Why that would require some thinking. ANd then we could be racist for disagreeing with our Dear Leader and his Socialist/Facist Cabal.

I guess you get all sides from CNN, and MSNBC... well in your world probably so... Ultra Liberal, and Facist/Socialist/Communist/Progressive

But then again, facts hurt you. Do some research... in depth research about what people actually said and when. Fact of the matter is the ex head of NASA said Obama instructed him to concentrate on outreach to Muslim nations, and making them feel good about their contributions to science. He wanted US missle technology shared with Muslim nations. A FACT you do not want to face or acknowledge.

Who is being dumbed down? Recent public high school graduate are you?

Actually
It's about 800,000 USD, not 800 mil...(if the original 24.7 mil rubles is correct).

By the way, I agree with tubablill and colecrew.

As a taxpayer, I don't want my hard earned dollars. Going toward exploring dead planets. While we are destroying our own planet, with greenhouse gases, water pollution, nuclear waste, Illegal dumping of toxic chemicals in our land fills, and other crap. People are so hung up on Star Trek, that they don't understand, that its a fantasy. Its a fairy tale for grown ups. I give more credibility to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, than Star Trek.

A few readers have commented that that our space program had been more liability than value, that exploring our solar system is not worth the effort and expense and that it is a 'fantasy', and that we should turn ourselves inward to 'save our planet', etc. etc. There may be some basis for all that, but not 'aiming for the stars' will have an even worse effect. The space program has been responsible for immense economic and technological benefits,, and scientific advances. The other countries and especially our two biggest rivals, Russia and China realized that by just observing the U.S. economy and scientific community in its 'heyday'. If the current regime had even designated one half of the 'stimulus package' to the space program, we would not be in the economic stagnation that we are in now. No, so far all of the funds used in the 'stimulus' have been to 'pay bill' and keep government activities functioning, which is necessary, but nothing but nothing of it has gone to increase productivity and put people back to work. Now, more than any time in the history, have there been more people on the 'dole'. The modus operendi of the current regime is to 'dumb down' everything-put everybody into an entitlement mind-set, stifle productivity, reward mediocrity and penalize achievement. The demise of the space shuttle and the dumbing-down of our space program so that we will have to buy seats from other countries to go to the space station is the stupidest thing this current regime has done. Absolutely shameful, and the damage to our country may be irrepairable. We have become a disgrace and laughingstock in the eyes of the world, and chumps to the Russians and Chinese.

RE: Russia to build new commercial spaceport near China, report says
Thank you, jor55. Good to see someone who is thinking a little deeper.

I work at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the main reason for studying the "dead planets" that blackjack861 eluded to is to find out why they are dead in the first place, so that Earth doesn't turn into that. We know that Mars was at one time a lot like Earth with flowing water, ozone, etc. but we don't exactly know why it is now a "dead" planet. If we found that out, maybe we could stop Earth from doing the same thing. This is just one of thousands of ways that space exploration helps each human here on Earth.

Also, these comments have gone way off course. The main thing to applaud here is Russia is now building a commercial spaceport, where the government is supporting competitive commercial industry, which was not even an option for this country a while back. It will be very exciting to see what companies are created to use this spaceport, and how they plan on competing in the global market.
