British sustainable design firm Plus Minus Solar has developed an inexpensive, solar-powered device that can produce light and power electronics.
Designed by Adam Robinson, the LED Solar Pebble is powered by batteries that recharge using sunlight captured by solar panels on its shell.
The device may not seem overwhelming, but its low price tag is an important step for developing nations — specifically those in rural Africa, according to the company — that don’t have easy or affordable access to such technology.
For developed nations, it’s a tiny, convenient way to charge a smartphone or handheld electronic device in the home or while camping.
It’s expected in June 2010.
