Infographic: How cars are killing us (and where, and why)

By | March 12, 2010, 4:00 AM PST

The odds of being killed in a car are about 1 in 100.

But how do your odds change if you’re in the United States, versus say, Bangladesh?

According to a new infographic by Infrastructurist, you’re actually safer if you’re in a richer country.

Yet just 10 nations are responsible for the majority of the world’s traffic accident-related deaths — including the U.S.

The infographic pulls several interesting statistics about traffic fatalities. For example, did you know that auto accidents are expected to become the fifth leading cause of death by 2030?

That’s ahead of diabetes, lung cancer and AIDS.

See the full infographic.

Thanks Verd
Very interesting, if unexpected. I'm a bit concerned though - I'm
losing weight at the moment, am I therefore at risk of being killed by
lightening? Or does it only apply to people who are lightened by
removal of their head?

Afica vs. N & S America identical?
The Americas accounted for exactly 234,768 traffic deaths. So did the Africa region. Exactly. Really? Not a difference of +/-0.000426% (1 person)? Wish I'd bet money on that in Vegas.

RE: Infographic: How cars are killing us (and where, and why)
I agree - useless statistics. Doesn't take into account population density, automobiles per capita, other factors.

Europe's per-capita ownership of automobiles is far less than USA's, but their population density is generally higher.

don't get your math....
first the first statement : odds of being killed in car .
in my life time?
in a year?
what? no qualifier?

according to the info graphic....
death rate (per year)
average for the world ~17 per 100,000
average for rich nation ~10.2 per 100,000

Where do you get 1 in 100?
Based on the graphics info.. I assume you mean 1 in 10,000
...in a given year...
and statics don't equate that to mean 1 in 100 over 100 years.
the statics don't work that way. (over simplified/bad math)

and then there is the fact the 10 nations making up majority of the crashes .. represent the majority of the world's population (Duh)

Really suspect when laymen/newsmen try to make a point with statics.
Most don't know enough to present the info correctly.

Please put a bit more thought in to your comments on the subject.

Getting Killed "By" A Car Since Pedestrians & Cyclists are Involved
The info mentioned getting killed "in" a car but the ulterior effects are more tragic. I was injured while riding my bike when a motor vehicle operator struck me from behind. I wanted to find the statistics in that particular area of San Diego but the data wasn't available. Even the so-called bicycle coalitions and organizations haven't bothered to determine and study the statistics. I think it would be useful to substantiate the implementation of precautions or engineering controls that would enhance safety.
Otherwise, this is very worthy data. Thanks.
