Infographic: Gasoline consumption by U.S. state

By | April 28, 2010, 9:02 AM PDT

How much gasoline does your state burn per person?

It’s a good question. Illustrator Martha Kang McGill at Infrastructurist decided to answer it with the average citizen in mind, illustrating the layout of all 50 states’ gas habits in a handy new infographic.

Naturally, the higher the population of a state, the higher total gas usage is. But what about per capita? Which states are the most efficient in using gas, and which are the worst offenders?

The infographic reveals that a populous state such as New York uses lots of gas overall, but actually uses little on a per-capita basis. (Must be all those folks taking trains into New York City.)

The best:

  • New York
  • Hawaii
  • Rhode Island
  • Illinois
  • Utah

Conversely, less populous states such as Alabama, Iowa, New Hampshire and North Dakota have higher than average consumption, owing to the long distances citizens must travel.

The highest per capita usage? Wyoming.

Here’s a look at the entire infographic, which is based on data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
