India, China will economically surpass U.S., U.K. in 2048

By | November 25, 2009, 8:22 AM PST

In a speech at TEDIndia, statistician Hans Rosling predicted the exact date that India and China’s economies will catch up with the U.S. and the U.K.

Background about Rosling: He’s a doctor and professor of global health at Sweden’s Karolinska Institute who previously identified a new paralytic disease induced by hunger in rural Africa. His current work focuses on dispelling common myths about the so-called “developing world.”

A few quoted takeaways from Rosling’s presentation:

“Asia will regain its dominant position as the leading part of the world, as it used to be, over thousands of years…I will [predict] that by trying to predict precisely at what year the average income per person in India, in China, will reach that of the West. And I don’t mean the whole economy, because to grow an economy of India to the size of U.K., that’s a piece of cake, with one billion people. But I want to see when will the average pay, the money for each person, per month, in India and China, when will that have reached that of U.K. and the United States?”

“People interested in growth are turning their eyes towards Asia.”

“Inequalities in China and India I consider really the big obstacle because to bring the entire population into growth and prosperity is what will create a domestic market, what will avoid social instability, and which will make use of the entire capacity of the population. So, social investments in health, education and infrastructure, and electricity is really what is needed in India and China.”

“What I’m really worried about is war. Will the former rich countries really accept a completely changed world economy, and a shift of power away from where it has been the last 50 to 100 to 150 years, back to Asia? And will Asia be able to handle that new position of being in charge of being the most mighty, and the governors of the world? So, always avoid war, because that always pushes human beings backward. Now if these inequalities, climate and war can be avoided, get ready for a world in equity. Because this is what seems to be happening.”

Rosling’s date on which India and China will economically catch up to the U.S.? July 27, 2048.

RE: India, China will economically surpass U.S., U.K. in 2048
How can anyone predict anything 39 years into the future? Heaven forbid it is also likely that India will have an accidental nuclear war with Pakistan in ten years. China could have a civil war or a massive ecological disaster in 15 years which spills tens of millions of refugees on to the world. I'm not even going to get into the effects brought on by Climate Change. What happens if cheap labor is replaced by robots in maybe 20 years time? What if the U.S. has a genetic engineering revolution in five years etc?

RE: India, China will economically surpass U.S., U.K. in 2048
I think we predict things with respect to the current changes in the
world. And it is of course that the business world has realized the
capabilities of the manpower and resources in India and China
already. So it is obvious that they will be more interested in
setting up the business in the Asian countries especially India and
China.I think the countries' economic development is qualitative and
not quantitative, which US lacked during the global melt down. Today
the India have unveiled the details regarding GDP growth for the Q2
of 7.5% which was much more than the expected. These all will boost
foreign investments here.Ifyou people are able to predict the issues
that may happen in India and China in the coming decades, it will be
reasonable to predict their transformation from the label of
DEVELOPING COUNTRIES to DEVELOPED COUNTRIES.And also, do you think
AI and Robots can replace the advantages of human brain and brown?
Will we allow that to happen??

Someday
Someday we will realize what brought us our prosperity: liberty and freedom, free enterprise, and capitalism. The administration that currently is in power does not believe in these things. Governments do not create wealth....they take it away. We are seeing now the effects of the failed policies. Today the EPA proclaimed CO2 as a dnagerous gas. Junk science will lead to more regulations and higher energy costs as well as higher taxes. We are heading in the wrong direction.

I disagree. I believe that until the Asian countries change their mindset and belief that "Education is always better in the U.S. or U.K.", their income will always be less than those who were educated in the West than in their own country, and therefore employers in their country will never match what they are paying in the U.S. or in other Western countries, even if workers there are no less knowledgeable or capable. Another thing is if you look at China's and India's history thus far, they really are more concerned about self-sufficiency rather than world-domination. Also, in Asian countries, personal and family interest really comes first rather than the economic or political status of their country. I guess their culture and history is a big part of this...

As jobs continue to move over sea, for our children's sake, let's hope it takes less time for these countries to reach the economic statis of the UK and US.

RE: India, China will economically surpass U.S., U.K. in 2048
You got that correct, pizzaman7.

US and UK tax-victims have been subsidizing Red China and India for over
2 decades, now, primarily through transfers of knowledge and technology.

The Copenhagen cabal and Kyoto protocol promise to make things much
worse unless they are steadfastly opposed.

Red China and India and Bangladesh and Pakistan and VietNam and Iran
and Somalia and Sudan will never reach the economic status of the USA
and UK unless and until they respect life, liberty, property and privacy.
They're focused on and actively dragging the UK, Europe and the USA
down to their levels or worse... and "our" president and congress-critters
and "trade representatives" and bureaubums are working for them and
against us.

Mr Rosling Failed to account for the fact that...
Both China and India's monetary reserves are in USD. This negates that possibility. Nice try thought from a nationalist invested in a country that hasn't been relevant in more than 3 centuries.

RE: India, China will economically surpass U.S., U.K. in 2048
I want to see economic parity globally. I think that's the true measure of success. In other words not just the chicken in every pot and a car in every garage, but instead a clean environment. It does little good when the "first world" exhibits a sham tempt at environmental reform while the developing world does not even bother. Most distressing are India and China where industrialization is under way in a massive way. The results are huge plumes of smoke belching from chimneys, mercury and other poisons leeching into water and water tables and petroleum dumped onto land forgotten. Worse is the potential of nuclear waste. Graft, corruption and tacit disregard completes the picture. All of this means that even if the first world gets its act together, the developing world will poison itself in the process of developing itself. Health and air quality issues coupled with wages will cause issues for some time to come. The lack of parity between the developed and developing world mean that workers in the first world will be challenged because there will continue to be no place for the classic manufacturing worker. These people instead will be thrust onto the front line as fodder for house to house combat in future wars. These parity issues will continue to plague the first world despite educational inequities. The first world will have many more people without jobs and sadly the U. S. well end up like Germany and France with permanent, devastating unemployment and no potential job in manufacturing or agriculture to sustain them.

RE: India, China will economically surpass U.S., U.K. in 2048
Why is a sunset country like the UK mentioned alongside USA? And why India can be compared side by side with China? There are no comparison between these two "pairs". And you westerners, get off your high horse. Democracy takes many forms, and India has taken the worst form for sure. India has demonstrated to you how this concept can screw up when you have 40% illiterates who can't even read the ballat! Your democracy has created gridlocks, strike (look the the unbelievable British Airway intented strike which showed so much greed), corruptions, and not to mention human sufferings and violence. Don't force others to do what YOU THINK is right, because basic human right is to survive, to feel safe and be feed FIRST, BEFORE they can think about VOTING!

RE: India, China will economically surpass U.S., U.K. in 2048
It'z really shameful and grimy to blame Indian Democracy. It's
natural that there will be corruption in democracy. It is never
possible to stop it 100%. The only thing we can do is to minimize it
as much as possible. The real achievement of the world's largest
democracy was that they could win that goal. The best example evident
to that is that Indian and Chinese economy we able to withstand
keeping its growth pace when the western and European economies were
crumbling down. Why did America tighten their belts to strengthen
the relation with India and China and other Asian economies??? And
it's just a greedy mentality if we say the two Asian Giants won't
come upto the American economy. We the people of India don't loose
houses due to bankruptcy. Our banks do not collapse, instead green
shoots of development can be seen all around. We dream for self
sufficiency and prosperity, and not sky scrapers or casinos

RE: India, China will economically surpass U.S., U.K. in 2048
We can use differential equations to estimate a lot of things...

However, it appears that Hans Rosling is using tunnel vision in his thinking. Four items come to mind that Rosling obviously takes away from his equation:

1. water
2. energy
3. population aging
4. pollution

These issues will completely erase any possible opportunity for all the 2.5 billion people in India and China to rise to our standard of living. Simply put, the natural resources and energy will have been depleted. For example, water is already becoming scarce. Nestle company is currently siphoning off water from the Great Lakes and shipping it to China. Middle East oil will begin to decline in output by 25-50% by 2050. The population of China is rapidly aging and there are not enough workers available to take care of the elderly. And the pollution created from $2.3 billion people would probably devastate not only Asia but North America as well as toxins flow across the Pacific.

RE: India, China will economically surpass U.S., U.K. in 2048
One more twist: currently, India, S. Korea, China, Vietnam and Japan have had their economies driven mostly by US and European investment over the past 50 years. Without our investment, these countries would be nothing but wastelands of poverty. The United States brought the whole darn world out of poverty, building Europe and East Asia from crumbs after WWII.

Frankly, it's time you brats in Asia started paying for your technology instead of stealing it from us, and also start paying for your security. I hear lots of criticism, much well founded about US foreign policy, but what about the rest of you? You want world security and 10% growth rates, but refuse to engage in the war on terror and most of you do not have human rights, workers rights, environmental policies or the personal liberties and freedoms we enjoy in America.

I suggest you bring your societies up to par with human rights, freedoms and stop stealing all your technology!!!

Our problem is greed, and so is yours. Our greedy international companies off shore our jobs and our illustrious Democrat and Republican parties both are blatantly violating our immigration policies.

China has stolen so much intellectual property and India has infiltrated our IT industries. What are you two young brats going to do without yo mommy and daddy, US and EU? China dumps cheap garbage on our shores and our stupid govt goes along with it so we can borrow trillions from a communist regime that we all know funds Iran and North Korea's atomic bomb projects.

The US rose from nothing on her own. We invented most of what other nations consider part of their standard techno gadgets. China, Russia and Eastern Europe are engaging in cyber-warfare against the West.

If China and India do not offer massive troops to stop the Taliban, then why the hell should we trade with them? They have standing armies of about 3 million, why not help us in Afghanistan and Iraq? After all WE AMERICANS are giving our blood and treasure to protect your energy supplies and shipping lanes.
