In NOAA video, watch Japan tsunami race across Pacific

By | March 15, 2011, 7:43 AM PDT

A new video from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows how the tsunami that devastated Japan this weekend ripped across the Pacific Ocean.

It might surprise you, but the propagation of its waves is largely shaped by the land masses around the Pacific Ocean — not its wide open expanse itself.

Understanding these physics is key to most efficiently addressing alarm and rescue efforts — as you can see, it took about six hours before Indonesia was hit, and the western coast of the United States actually saw effects from the tsunami before Australia did.

Nevertheless, the video is a stunning illustration of how quick and massive this disaster really was — and by extension, how complex it can be to predict.

An obvious waste of money. Why would anyone on the west coast be interested in this?

West coast of where? The US? The damage in Hawaii was in the millions. So was Santa Cruz California and elsewhere on the western US coast. A lot of boats got wrecked and or sunk.

RE: trapper
You're kidding, right? Don't you think there is maybe, just maybe, some helpful scientific knowledge here about how a tsunami travels based on the ocean floor. Can't you see that because of how the land masses are arranged, they direct the waves to the West coast? Can't you visualize the importance of this knowledge if there was a quake off the California coast (which has been predicted is due at any time)? I found this pretty obvious. Amazing what people perceive as obvious.

Amazing to see and given how important warning systems are I imagine this will be a very, very useful work.

@Trapper
What is not evident in this video is that the tsunami wave increases near the coast due to shallow water. You can see the red fringe along the coast, although barely. Also I believe the bays can act as funnels, thus increasing the wave height. Finally, the tsunami wave does not seem to break as a normal wave, it is more like a level increase that carries a long way inland.
Look at this: http://www.facebook.com/friends/edit/?ref=tn#!/video/video.php?v=1605260179420&comments (sorry, I did'nt find another source for that video).
It is much more like a torrential flood than a wave.

another successful attempt to rile people up and make them respond to obvious BS. Well, maybe it isn't so obvious to a lot of people after all.
