Holographic heads-up displays coming to your car’s rear, side view mirrors

By | October 19, 2009, 8:19 AM PDT

A new prototype of a holographic projector was unveiled last week that makes a heads-up display on a car’s side or rear-view mirror a reality.

Such a display would offer the ability to display your speed or distance between other vehicles in real time, superimposing it over the actual road view depicted in the mirror.

The prototype, designed by U.K.-based Light Blue Optics, is far smaller than current vehicular HUD systems and uses constructive and destructive light interference to build the display, reports Technology Review.

The device was presented at the Society for Information Display’s Vehicles and Photons 2009 symposium, in Dearborn, Mich.

The benefits of such a device are twofold: First, this broadens the possible implementation of such technology, and second, it can help improve driving safety by overlaying relevant information on top of the actual road view, keeping drivers’ eyes where they need to be.

Oh, and as for the holographic part of it? True holograms have nothing to do with it. The projectors use liquid crystal on silicon to modulate beams of red, green, and blue laser light to create an image — thus using principles of holography (projected image via light interference) without actually creating a hologram.

1st, you can't get drivers to use the mirror in front of them, let alone the side mirrors. 2nd, someone will figure out how to diplay text messages in the HUD, making driving all the more exciting.

"someone will figure out how to diplay text messages in the HUD"

You are so right! If the large majority of drivers can't seem to grasp simple concepts like indicators and speedometers, how can they be expected to make any meaningful use of some "hi tech" gadgetry? Those most likely to use it are the minority of drivers who already drive quite well. So for the rest, it will just be one more "billboard" to further distract them and worsen their already poor driving habits...

What an absolute wast of time, in the not too distant future car manufacturers will wake up to the fact that there such things as mini cameras available which will supurcede the use of expensive dangerous and ugly wing mirrors, now if some bright spark alters this technology to fit rear view cameras on a head up display they might have some thing worthwhile.

Not doubt Director10, if there gonna spend the time to shoot an digital image to the rear view mirror why not skip mirrors outside all togeter and put them in with the Gadges, or a few locations on the windshield to allow drivers of different hiegths to view it accurately. That would make more sense.

I am curious how a locally ran gadget such as this would just be able to accept text messages till there are transceivers that are connected to it. I would really doubt that being possible without integrating it to the On Star type of stuff. BUt that ability has always been around and they haven't done that yet. I mean OnStar is all about safty, so if the networks were compatable then wellit would have been done already. OnStar like services have been around longer then SMS!

With this kind of technology in the horizons, I would not be surprised if we do get a mobile phone that also serves as a projector pretty soon (the mythological pomegranate phone)

I have a crazy theory. Everything is optimized for THE FAMILY. All spins respect the family as a unit. All television content respects marriage as a contract. No doubt, this a gigantic topic one can discuss endlessly but think about only one aspect - Liability.

An individual or a family cannot fight the system. So they are willing to pay a hefty amount to get out of any liabilities. It is a highly profitable business.

When we drive a car as opposed to traveling in public transport, we invite massive liabilities at every turn, which we can't fight. And remember medical services are equally one sided and lucrative.

If it will eliminate the "blind SPOT", then that much the better. To get that gray area of traffic, it now takes all sorts of sick-ons to make sure.
