GM sells 300 Volts in January
General Motors reported its January sales and noted that it is selling every Volt it can make, but that figure is only about 300 for the month.
The automaker said its January sales were up 23 percent from a year ago. GM's solid January sales included a brief mention of the Volt.
Don Johnson, vice president of sales operations for GM, said on a conference call:
We are basically selling every (Volt) that we build. We sold 300 -- we delivered 321 in January and that's right in line with expectations.
Sales of the Volt are being closely watched given it's a high-profile electric car. The issue for GM is manufacturing capacity and consumer interest. Consumers are interested in the Volt, but need to test drive and become familiar with the car.
To that end, GM said earlier this week that dealerships in key markets will get the Volt for test driving purposes. GM is aiming to take the Volt nationwide by the end of the year.
