GM: Fuel efficient cars sell in April, but Volt sales slip from March
General Motors on Tuesday touted sales of its fuel efficient cars such as the Chevrolet Cruze, but its high-profile electric Volt moved 493 units in April, down from 608 in March.
Judging from GM's statement, $4 a gallon gas is pushing consumers to more fuel efficient cars. However, those gas prices aren't enough to make the Volt a mainstream purchase.
GM's April sales were up 27 percent from a year ago. GM cited sales of the Cruze and crossovers like the Equinox and Terrain. GM's Don Johnson, vice president of U.S. Sales Operations said:
"Recently, rising fuel prices have led many to re-think their vehicle choice."
However, the disconnect is that the Volt has sold fewer units year to date (1,703) than all of GM's cars---except for the discontinued Cobalt (679 units) and Trailblazer (11 units).
Year to date, GM has manufactured 2,678 Volts at its Detroit plant.
