General Motors said that it reuses, recycles or converts to energy waste from operations in a little more than half of its global plants.

These plants, dubbed "landfill free," represent 52 percent of GM's worldwide plants. GM has 76 landfill free facilities.

In 2010, GM recycled or reused 2.5 million tons of waste at its plants. Overall, GM estimates that it cut 8.4 million metric tons of CO2 emissions from its output.

GM said that it monitors and measures plant waste on a monthly basis. Efforts to recycle shipping material, plastic caps, tires and paint sludge into car parts and other items appear to be paying off.
