Evergreen Solar debuts rugged ‘String Ribbon’ solar panels for coastal installations

By | May 19, 2010, 6:16 AM PDT

Evergreen Solar on Wednesday introduced a new, rugged kind of “String Ribbon” ES-A solar panel at the Genera Solar Show in Madrid, Spain.

The new panels, which are made of silicon wafers, are intended for use in coastal areas and have met the IEC 61701 standard for salt mist corrosion for photovoltaic panels. (The test involves exposing the panels to a concentrated salt solution for 96 hours.)

Evergreen claims its PV panels are manufactured with up to a 30 percent smaller carbon footprint than the competition. It also says the panels pay for themselves in as quickly as 12 months.

“These panels are already certified for use in climates which have heavy snow or high winds,” said Evergreen sales and marketing vice president Scott Gish in a statement. “This feature is extremely beneficial for customers in regions where sea mist can be an issue like Spain, Italy, France and the coastal regions of the United States.”

The company recently announced Q1 2010 revenues of $78.5 million, noting reduced manufacturing costs and increased shipments. Read the full transcript at SmartPlanet sister site BNET.
